I know that you all have been waiting with baited breath for this news. :biggrin2:

http://espn.go.com/college-sports/story/_/id/7554557/memphis-tigers-accept-invitation-join-big-east

The Big East says the Tigers officially accepted an invitation to be part of the conference's next incarnation in 2013. Memphis is the seventh school, and fourth from Conference USA, to sign up for future membership in the Big East since December. The Tigers will compete in the Big East in all sports.
In related news, the Big East is changing its name to "The BCS Rejects Conference".

The Big East knows it cannot be competitive in football...so they have been positioning themselves to be the premier basketball conference. That would be the only reason for adding Memphis.

Automatic Qualifier bids are likely going to be axed in 2014, so I don't even know why the Big East bothers trying to keep their football portion together. These schools would be better off making their own league that doesn't have those seaboard basketball schools mucking up everything

I like this for one particular reason. It will allow for a conference championship game if they keep their current members. While it's not a terribly impressive line-up, it does feature Cincy, Boise St., South Florida, SMU and Houston. While it is largely C-USA schools now, Boise St. and the tradition of Navy gives it a bit more prestige and a flagship football program. It certainly will present a tougher road to going undefeated than the WAC did, and the conference championship game helps insure a bit less of a cakewalk as well. I'd say it's marginally tougher than it was before as losing Syracuse, West Virginia and Pitt hurt, but Houston, SMU, Navy, Boise St.,+a conference championship game should keep it from being much easier.

Ultimately, the new Big East tears the state of Texas a bit more, as while SMU and Houston were together before, this step up raises their visibility a bit more and gives them a chance to do things on a slightly larger stage. So, couple that with A&M in the SEC and I think the state of Texas and perhaps even Texas' stranglehold on the state (which was always predicated on all the major in-state programs either being irrelevant or in their shadow) becomes weaker.

Finally, this does seem to finally push C-USA and the MWC into each others arms. Ironically, it would play out a lot like the 4 quadrant WAC, but it will make it that much harder for a nobody to slip through undefeated (since it will have a conference championship game as well). It also really puts the "Big-12" on an island in terms of not having a championship game and having small membership. They're still a major defection away from falling apart.

Watching Memphis football over these past 7 years that I have lived here has been painful. Memphis basketball, on the other hand, has been fairly entertaining. Memphis, in my opinion, will never have a contender for football, but will be able to compete with the basketball folks. As was pointed out above, the Big East is setting themselves up to be the premier basketball conference. I agree wholeheartedly. I also approve of it. Memphis will have their old rivalry with Louisville renewed and it will actually mean something. For Memphis' sake, I hope Louisville doesn't bolt for the Big 12...

How about that!!!!!
A nothing team, to a nothing conference. ;)

Why do they still pretend to play football? Round ball is their future.

I'm afraid if given a chance, Louisville will bolt. They were a finalist along with West Virginia when the Big 12 added a 10th team, and Lousiville very nearly won that ticket. If the Big 12 decides to go to 11 or 12, Louisville will be their first target.

West Virginia and the Big East Conference are nearing agreement on a settlement worth at least $20 million that would resolve all issues between both parties, college football industry sources told CBSSports.com.
The Mountaineers will join the Big 12 for the 2012-13 school year. However, in a bizarre twist, sources told CBSSports.com that West Virginia officials have contacted future Big East members to see if one could join in 2012 instead of 2013.
WVU had been saying all along they'd be in the Big XII this fall and figured they were just haggling over the price.

The article went on to say the Big XII will help with the exit fee.

As for Memphis to the Big East, can anyone explain why they still have an AQ BCS bid?

I don't see the appeal of the C-USA/MWC merger. Bringing together two crappy conferences is not going to create one great conference.

I'm sure the people at the Extension Center feel they are next up on the Big East's radar.

^As long as AQ status exists none of the conferences are going to strip another of that status for fear that one day it could lose AQ status. It's the same reason the BCS did not kick the Fiesta Bowl when all their finance stuff came out (the BCS wound up fining them $1 million). The other BCS bowls were afraid of opening the door for them to be kicked out one day as well.

Why is everyone so certain the AQs will be done away with? Who is pushing for their abolition?

It's easy to slam the move - on both sides. However, IMO, this is a positive move for Memphis. Realignment is not finished yet. As schools continue to pair off in new conference affiliations, which set of schools are better for Memphis to be paired with? Obviously, the Big East schools. The majority are basketball 'first' schools, as is Memphis.

It's a positive move for the Big East because it bridges the geographic gap in the extremely large footprint they've created for themselves (not trying to defend that!). It's hard to understand in our football-crazed conference; but, much like the ACC, the Big East is about basketball first. And Memphis fits that mold nicely. There will be renewal of old rivalries with Cincy and Louisville as well.

Honestly, Memphis makes much more sense that San Diego State, and even Boise State.
