When was the last time we had an event around it?

I know Gottfried likes to "just practice" and wants to sound serious but we are missing a huge recruiting event. Midnight Madness in College Basketball has quickly become like FSU's football banquet. All recruits want to be there and I think we are missing out a serious recruiting tool. Lately, this has become the big deal for recruits to go to and even set announcements as to which event they will visit. Plus, ESPN and other places cover them and Bama Bball needs as much press as possible.

And honestly, the players do not become more focused from that one practice at 6 AM.

First of all I want to tell you that I think it's a good idea, but there are some downfalls for us being a football school. UK, Duke, Kansas, and UNC are basketball schools who fill up their arenas on those nights. During football season it would be hard (if not impossible) to fill our building. Empty seats could be a turn off and show that we are not committed to basketball. You would think a school that had 92+k at a spring football game could fill up on Midnight Madness. We seem to recruit well without one by using football games as the main visiting event. A good example would be this weekend with the biggest out-of-state prospect in years coming for homecoming.

We use to do this, probably 3 or 4 years in a row. However, the atmosphere obviously did not compare to the midnight madness events you see at other schools around the country. That being said it's hard to call this a lost recruiting opportunity.

All those people that can't drive back to Birmingham after 9:00 during the season surely can't stay up for a midnight start...

I forgot about the time change last year but the 3 or 4 I previously referenced started at midnight.

The traditional Midnite Madness seems to be, sadly, going away. Since the NCAA changed the rules, few people actually do the event at 12AM... many do it earlier in the evening. And many others don't even do it on the same day or maybe at all. Even the Florida Gators, from what I understand, are not having Midnite Madness.
