Mike Davis fired at UAB

The extension center had made the tournament once in his six years there. Their attendance was also horrible, not even selling out the Memphis game a few days after Gene Bartow died. Not a huge surprise.

he took over Indiana when they were pretty good, went to the final four in his first or second year and then proceeded to run them into the ground. i've heard him speak a time or two and was not tremendously impressed. he did not, however, do a terrible job with uab

Uab talks about hiring an up and coming mid major coach... Does uab not realize they are a mid major program? This is precisely what is wrong with uab.

I know Davis personally so my opinion is probably biased somewhat. But to lay all the blame for poor ticket sales at his feet is a little bit of stretch IMO. What do they expect the guy to do ? Large majority of that responsibility should fall on an entity like tide pride to promote ticket sales, etc.

I don't perceive grant as being that big of a promoter of ua's bb program as compared to someone like pearl whose willingness to do the absurd knew no bounds but apparently his character didn't either.

The only way to get in the NCAA tournament now as weak as C-USA is now is to win the conference tourney title which you cant expect to do every year.

UAB can and has been a very good basketball program. Mike Anderson had the program really going before he left and Davis never did much with it. The excitement for the program was lost under his leadership.

Hiring Mike Davis to coach at UAB and expecting the ticket sales to dramatically increase was a bit like putting a new coat of paint on an old Ford LTD and trying to sell it as new. No matter what is done to change the outward appearance, it doesn't improve what is underneath.

Some of their fans want Andy Kennedy. He hasn't done much at Ole Miss, so I don't think he'd do any better than Davis.

I think the best they'll do is an up and coming assistant looking for his first head coaching job. Merging two mid-major conferences (when one lost their only "name" school) is not suddenly going to make them a top level league.

Does UAB really expect to make the NCAA tourney?

Why wouldnt they? Theyve been to the elite 8 before, which is also the farthest Bama has ever gone in the tournament. And recently, theyve been getting to the tournament more often than we have. Making it to the big dance is not an unrealistic expectation for UAB.

My parents were in Birmingham Friday night and mentioned the talk on the news stations about UAB wanting Kennedy (I hear none of it here in Montgomery). I told my dad that the move makes sense for Kennedy. He hasn't done much at Ole Miss and could easily lose his job depending on who MSU hires to replace Stansburry.

Actually, a name I heard recently was TJ Cleveland. He played at Arkansas because of his uncle Mike Anderson, was on his staff at UAB, Missouri, and Arkansas and he has ties to this area where he played high school ball at Minor. Many feel he is on the cusp of a head coaching job but he may not have the personality for it. He has always seemed to be a quiet reserved person and would not be a big promotor of the program. But he does know the game.

That would be epic. It would be so great to make fun of Ole Miss for losing a coach to program like UAB.

You are correct. My father has been a UAB season ticket holder since they started the basketball program. He loved what Mike Anderson was doing with the program. He told me that after watching a Mike Davis coached team for several games, he stopped going because he would fall asleep during the games. He said that all Mike knew was the Bobby Knight style of BB, but did not have and could not recruit the talent to run it successfully.

If we are changing any staff members at UA, I would hope Coach Davis gets an interveiw. He'd be a strong addition to most any staff.
