mike sherman? (OFFICIAL MIKE SHERMAN THREAD)

Re: mike sherman????

He might not be a bad hire. Look at USC Pete Carroll (bad NFL coach) looking at the NC game for the 3rd year in a row. Nebraska Bill Callahan (bad NFL coach) now in the Big 12 title game and looking at a BCS bid. Stallings (bad NFL coach) average 10 wins a season. Seems to me that ex NFL coaches seem to do pretty good in college.

Since Mike Sherman is currently with the Texans, we get bits and pieces of information on him from time to time. From what I understand, Gary Kubiak thinks alot of him and basically lured him out of retirement to join the Texans staff. I know the Texans really stink this year, but I wouldn't be lumping all that on Sherman. He is well respected in the League and wasn't exactly a failure with the Packers. The downside is that I don't think he is quite the guy Bama is looking for unless we get desperate but he does have the first name Mike, so he's probably at the top of the list.

According to the Tuscaloosa News, Mike Sherman has interest in the job. This could explain why the jet was in Texas, since Sherman is currently with the Texans.

When I saw the story this morning I freaked. But now that I've had some time to think about it I don't think it would be a bad hire. It wouldn't be "homerun" as so many including myself are rooting for, then again neither Carroll nor Weiss were considered homeruns when they were hired.

I would say Weiss was more of a homerun than the others. His name always came up for NFL Head Coaching jobs, and a big reason he never got one was because the Patriots would be making Super Bowl Runs, thus not allowing him to interview until their season was over. I think it was a big coup for Notre Dame to get him.

Re: mike sherman????

Bayou thanks I feel a little better now. I though it might have leggs. He may want the job but Im not sure if we want him. I know yall know the target but respect that yall have to protect sources and stay tight lipped. Yall have been so quiet I think we will be ok. Its kinda like a sign when yall are quiet. ;)

I will be honest. Anyone who says they know who our next coach is are guessing. We know who we are interested in, Jess has those names spelled out for everyone. Several of us have personal favorites or someone we think would be the home run or best hire. But being totally honest, I have no idea who is talking to who today.

Ding ding ding, we have a winner.

All these people posting "inside sources" and "sources close to the University" are nuts if they think they are being fed 100% reliable information. If Alabama has people that are involved with or close to the decision making process actually out leaking info to the the likes of us TideFans posters then the University has much bigger problems with its athletic department than any of us could imagine, and no top coach in his right mind would come work for a school where this type of behavior is tolerated.

Bad thing is, "reliable" info has already placed at least a half-dozen coaches as the next hire, so no matter who gets the job there will be some hyped up poster screaming "I told you so" and claiming his 40-yd line skybox booster insider was right all along.

At this point it appears that Mal Moore doesn't even know, so why would we believe that anyone else knows?

Re: mike sherman????

I don't understand all the negativity concerning Mike Sherman. Would he be my first choice if I thought we could land Spurrier or Saban? No. However, the guy was a pretty good NFL coach. He had a winning record at Green Bay and he is only 52.

If the Spurrier and Saban rumors turn out to be false, which as of right now, they seem to be, then we obviously are going to have to look at other coaches. As of right now all of the following have expressed no interest in the Alabama job: Spurrier, Saban, Grobe, Petrino, Leveatt?, Rodriguez has not been contacted and I doubt he leaves WV.

We could definitely do alot worse than a coach who had a pretty successfull NFL stint. As fans, we need to quit shooting down and criticizing every name that gets brought up that isn't Spurrier or Saban.

Re: mike sherman????

Yes, some of them are no doubt. But, Mike Sherman is a legitimate candidate. No, he is probably not on the "A" list, but you better believe that if all the coach speak turns out to be true and we can't lure a big name coach, then Mike Sherman will start to look like a very good choice IMO.

Re: mike sherman????

i guess mike sherman wouldn't be that bad of a hire... who knows he could turn out great... but he just doesn't seem like a very attractive hire among recruits, although maybe the whole former NFL coach thing would be good..... dunno...

Re: mike sherman????

Bama323 I agree wholeheartedly. I don't know why everyone seems so up in arms against the idea of hiring an NFL coach when NFL coaches have historically done so well coming to college: Pete Carroll, Charlie Weiss, Bill Callahan, Gene Stallings and even June Jones to a degree has gotten as much out of Hawaii as he could and has had a ball doing it. The only one I can think of that didn't work out very well has been Dave Wannstedt at Pitt and that one's still up in the air after only two seasons. IMHO, I see bringing in a proven NFL coach would be a boon to the program and an excellent hire.

Remember this: No football coach has ever won a national championship at two different schools; and in that respect I'm not quite as excited about either Superior or Saban.

Just my opinion.

Re: mike sherman????

He wouldn't be a bad hire. Runs a pro-style offense, which is good for recruiting. Has strong ties to the NFL which helps there as well.

One thing to note - Sherman was fired over the objections of Brett Favre who formed a strong connection with him during his tenure.

I'm still a Paul Johnson fan, with RR #2 but I think we could do worse than Sherman.

Just ask USC about hiring not-so-successful pro coaches.

And if the guy is ASKING to come here, that shows something as well - a love for the program and a belief that he can win here.

Wallace Wade at Alabama and Duke.

Re: mike sherman????

Mike Sherman? I don't believe Bama is that desperate .Anyone ever notice that he looks just like Ralph in "Christmas Story" movie?

Just heard on WJOX that Mike Sherman said he has not been contacted by Bama and is not interested in coaching here.
