NCAA Rules Committee Discusses Faking Injuries

I believe I've seen fans here talk about players faking injures (especially defensive players). It was a hot topic at the rules committee meeting this year per this article. I can only remember 1 obvious injury fake and a handful of suspicious injuries, but I'm sure there were more. No new rules were proposed this year, but I would expect something soon if Shaw feels the issues isn't going away.

I think at certain times officials could throw a flag for delay of game on the defense. Since play is stopped anyway for an injury it wouldn't cause any additional delay for the replay booth to take a look at the actions of a player before he went down and relay a message to the officials that it looks fake. Looking to the sideline before going down would be obvious.

LSU and the Barn are notorious for this. I would love to see it stopped. I am not sure how you can decide for sure that someone is faking, though there are definitely times that is seems obvious.

Make the faker sit 5 of their snaps. So if a defender goes down with an injury, they can't re-enter for 5 of their defensive snaps. Don't matter if the offense punts on the next snap...can't go back in until 4 more of their defensive snaps. I mean, they ARE injured, right?

This 100%! They do it because they only have to miss 1 play. Most teams feel like they can survive 1 play. Make it so they miss 5 defensive snaps, that's a different story. That would slow it down IMO, or teams would sub in a 3rd or 4th stringer just to fake an injury.

I like this, but then we would have to figure out who will keep up with how many snaps has it been.

The problem comes when a player probably needs to drop and take a play off to make sure he's okay but decides to 'push through' because he's certain it's not a big deal - while it may well be.

I hate fake injuries as much as anyone - and some are really obvious - but we have to make sure the cure for the problem doesn't unintentionally cause further injuries to players who otherwise would drop and wait for the training staff to evaluate them.

The part I find ironic about the whole thing is this: years ago there was this big hub-bub over increasing injuries. Saban pointed out - quite logically, might I add - that the hurry up has the potential to increase the number of plays plus fatigue that leads to more injuries. St. Gus Malzahn began his pontifications with "there's no evidence of that"......but it's HIS team that pulls the fake injuries to slow down the game.

I've been saying for awhile that Saban needs to do what he does with everything else and up the ante - have someone designated to fall out every single play of a hurry up drive. We have the talent that many of our backups that can come on for the one play you have to sit out are as good as the starters on 95% of the other teams.

So let's exploit it. Make Auburn (in particular) be on the receiving end.

It's garbage like this that causes me to have zero respect for Malzahn as a coach.
And look, I LOVE his enthusiasm and the way he gets into success on the sidelines. Nor am I the traditional Bama fan bashing Auburn just because.

But I'm more than a little wary of this junior high level of nonsense he's brought to the SEC.

Just google “Auburn fake injury gif” and let the hilarity ensue.

guys walking around fine on D, look to the sideline and then crumple to ground like they’ve been shot.

OFFENSIVE coaches like SHAW???

That's pretty simple...IF you're caught going in short, you're ejected. Happens again in same game..both player and head coach ejected. Simple.

I get what you're saying CA, but if you're hurt, don't get up. This isn't targeting the injured players. It's targeting the sniped ones.

Easy to say when your older and can pull a muscle standing up from your lounger - it's a whole other consideration when you have young men juiced on adrenaline who think they can just play through the injury.

Honestly, what I posted is the only reason they're not already throwing flags on seemingly obvious injury fakes - they don't want guys trying to push through.

As much as I would love to see flags thrown here, the bolded is why I prefer that they just leave it alone. Players already push through too much. If they are worried about a flag like this, they are even more inclined to stay in the game when they should take a break.

I think they ought to make it a reviewable call...that's pretty simple, right? If it's obvious, throw the red flag.

After the review, If there's any question, doubt goes to the player....if someone goes all boog and just flops...a major penalty should follow....and a short loss of participation as mentioned.

The NCAA needs to concentrate on teams named Tigers 🐅 cause the teams I've seen fake injuries is Auburn, LSU & maybe Clemson even though I'm not real sure they have faked injuries.
