So, my path on the penultimate street to my building was blocked by two sheriff's cars. I take the detour to circle around to find another roadblock in front of the gate to my building. The deputy tells me there is a bear sighting. I asked him if it is the friendly Yogi-kind or the dangerous Timothy Treadwell-killing kind. We chatted a few more minutes. It apparently is a juvenile. I asked the deputy if he'd ever encountered a bear before in downtown St. Augustine. He had not. Plenty of gators, but this is the first bear. Not sure how the bear ended up here. I was allowed to proceed to work after a few more minutes. Yogi has moved on and is still on the loose.

Women prefer the bear, but I’ll guarantee you they’d stay in the damn car.

We have several families of black bears in our neighborhood and hundreds in our city. They don't want to mess with people and vice versa. Just don't get between them and their food, don't EVER feed them, and there's no problem. We walked past a mom and 4 cubs last night. We did give them room to go on their merry way before we passed, but they are generally no more threatening than a lost dog.
