Good Lord! That's some serious coinage. I've never even heard of him until now, but I'm not a big soccer fan. They sure do take their soccer seriously across the pond.:eek:
Its football. Soccer is a madeup word devised by the Americans to belittle the world's greatest sport. Filthy heathens.;)

At least, that is what I was told when I was over there this summer.

Yeah, it's soccer...
I was shown the irony (by a Brazilian friend) in the fact that we call Football 'Football' when you don't really use your feet to touch the ball.

From my understanding, soccer is basically as commonly used in the other English speaking countries. Feel free to clarify.

I think the quote in the article was actually in US$. Here is another article which quotes a similar figure in Euro's. That is some serious cash... come on Mal, pony up for Nick!

i still maintain that baseball is the silliest sport. in addition to the lack of anything going on for 90% of the time, it is also the only sport where tommy lasorda's camel toe was on full display in his man tights on a nightly basis.

in no other sport do 60 yr old men wear tights.... well maybe san fransisco run walking competitions but.....hmmm.... that is a good analogy to baseball

* Argentina forward extends contract by two years to 2016
* Spanish media says net salary will be 10.5 million euros
(Adds details, quotes, background)
MADRID, Sept 18 (Reuters) - Barcelona forward Lionel Messi has signed a two-year contract extension with the European champions until 2016, the club said on Friday.
The Argentina international's improved deal includes a buyout clause worth 250 million euros ($368 million), the club said on their website (www.fcbarcelona.cat).
Barca president Joan Laporta said this week the 22-year-old, a favourite to win this year's FIFA World Player of the Year award, was poised to agree a new contract that would make him the club's best-paid player.
Barca gave no details of Messi's annual net salary but Spanish media reported he would be earning 10.5 million euros ($15.44 million) per season after taxes.
Wow! Earning $15.44MM, after taxes!

IMO, you have your eye on the wrong things when watching the game. Not that there's anything wrong with that...
