Nuclear Arms Race in the SEC

Have we ever seen anything like this? EVERY school in the SEC, except maybe Vanderbilt, is pulling out all the stops to WIN NOW and win big. Arkansas thinks it's Oklahoma and Ole Miss has delusions of grandeur. Alabama has shelled out the big bucks and Georgia, Florida, USC, and Tennessee are set. LSU is in transition again, but has the strongest recruiting base and now knows how to win - and they won't settle for less. Even Kentucky and MSU are fielding respectable teams and Auburn will always be in the mix. The way to win is to go to the boosters, shell out the cash, and hire the best coach possible and fill your staff with future head coaches. Every school is bringing in hired guns to compete at the highest level and win championships.

This is not your father's SEC. If anyone thinks that they are going to just win multiple championships and have 10 win seasons every year, they are crazy. Every week and every game is a war, and it is only going to get worse. Coaches are getting axed for winning 8 games and fans are upset if they only win 10. It is horrible and beautiful at the same time.

Where does it end? How far does this go? We are going to eat ourselves alive over the next 10 years and I really think that we are going to have 6-8 dominant programs that are capable of winning it all every year, with another couple who could hit it big from year to year. Every week has the potential of an upset. It is crazy.

Aren't you glad that you don't live in Pac 10 or Big 12 country? :biggrin2:

Agreed, LSUFan.

The arms race includes coaches, stadiums/facilities, and players. This is hardly an amateur athletics enterprise anymore.

It's like Major League Baseball of the past 10 years.... The SEC is on steroids in a very big way.

It's definitely exciting. But it's becoming more like the NFL in that good teams are going to have to accept losses, especially in this very balanced conference. We need a playoff more than ever.

ain't gonna happen with the ones not even having a championship game to maybe go undefeated.

You're absolutely right about that. We are at the point where 9-3 or 10-2 in the SEC is like 12-0 in the Big 10. Even if a Big 10 team beats us in the Capitol One Bowl, would anyone be so stupid as to believe that that team would win 10 games in the SEC if they had to play our schedule week in and week out? It is the grind that gets you. LSU beat all the top teams on their schedule and then they lose to Kentucky and Arkansas. Well, those teams had McFadden and Woodson. There is just no let up. Alabama and Auburn lose to Miss. St. It's ridiculous.

I'm not saying that any of us accept mediocrity, but to survive, we are going to have to understand that an undefeated season and a championship is rarer than we can imagine. As much as I hate to say it, it makes what Auburn did in 2004 really stand out. Of course, 2007 and 2008 are even tougher than '04 at this point.

These are exciting times. It's proof positive that this is year in and year out the most competitive league in the country. However, if this trend continues -- no one will be able to survive conference play unscathed. It's scary. Maybe the BCS should have a built in "SEC curve."

Is the SEC really that good? Or could it be that everyone in the conference is not very good and very average, thus the mediocrity and no one stands out when we all play against one another? I hate to say it, but I think the center of gravity in college football has shifted toward the West and that will become even more evident in coming years....
