Can a redshirt sophomore go pro? Both Milroe and Buchner are redshirt sophomores. I'm not sure how that works.
Yes, after 3rd year, but that only means they are eligible.

If Jalen Milroe has a very good year (maybe even just a "good" year), he could potentially go into the draft. I mean, look what Anthony Richardson did with a mediocre Florida team last year! The NFL has proven they draft very high based on potential not results.

So, again, if JM plays well this year, he could cash it in big time. If he were to play as he did against MSTU all season we'll win the NC and he'll be a top 5 pick and instantly be a multi-millionaire!

Or he can go Jalen hurt route and prove he can do same thing at different school. It's a win and win situation either way

If JM plays all season like he did against MTSU, he'll also have a Heisman in his trophy case.

I wonder what his NIL money is like?

I hope so. That worked out just fine.
One difference is that I don't think Mac was ever involved in a 3 way battle in which he was seriously considered an option to start over either Tua or Jalen. He knew he wasn't getting a shot, but he stuck around.

Simpson got (and still sort of has) his shot, but didn't take advantage of it.

IF he doesn't win the starting job at some point in this season, he likely won't be in a position to take the job in the future considering what's in front of him and who is coming in next year.

How do you know for certain that he didn’t have a shot? Do you think we bring in guys because they will be average or just wait their turn?

The difference is fan expectation placed on players because of star ratings. We hype a player and when they don’t deliver in our window of time we label them a bust. If Simpson stays long enough like Mac did to improve his maturity and decision making he could be one of the Alabama greats.

When we signed Bryce everyone thought he was just going to walk in there and take the job from Mac because of his star rating and status as being one of the top players in the country. He didn’t but he stuck around and the next year won a Heisman. I’m glad coaches give our players more time for development before writing them off like some of us. Simpson and all the QB’s will benefit greatly from having Tommy Rees as his OC and could start making a move. Let’s just give them more than a year and a half.

In addition to what 32 said, it's also comparing apples to oranges to because Mac was here before Covid and before the portal. Think if he would have transferred he would have had to sit a year too.

I think many of us were relieved JM looked so good but common sense dictates an awareness that was just one game. It was almost a perfect game so it begs the question "Is this the new Jalen" OR "Is this a flash in the pan?

Only time will tell. Actually, next week against Texas will tell.
If we can do it against TX and TN or Ole Sis. I'll be convinced that I didn't know what I was talking about. Milroe made a powerful statement against MTSU, and a powerful statement against the listed teams will have me jumping up and down and singing praise for Milroe. Then... We are back will be the theme for the rest of the year.

The OL will shoulder that responsibility. JM will be ok..but that OL can't play as though this game is their first of anything. No revelation there but just a fact. There can't be 3 Defensive guys in our Backfield on running plays.
Or passing plays. That the OL play didn't undo 'Bama altogether last year was down to the resilience and alchemy the Heisman Trophy "point guard" pulled off, and only underscores how Milroe needs time and a clean pocket to nurture his confidence. If them ain't there agin' Tejas, trouble ahead.

I'm basing it off memory that I don't ever recall there being an open competition among all three of them.

I could certainly be wrong, but was that ever the case...where it was announced or known that there was a three-way competition among Tua, Hurts and Jones?

I only recall there ever being discussion of a competition between Jalen and Tua.

If that's the case, then it's probably illogical to make any comparisons between Mac Jones and Ty Simpson in terms of them sticking it out or transferring.

I hear what you are saying however we don’t know as fans what is going on behind the scenes and what coaches are seeing in practice. Publicly I’m not sure if Saban announced there was a competition but Saban is always encouraging his players to compete and that no one’s spot is secure ala Jalen losing job to Tua.

Suggesting Mac Jones knew he didn’t have a shot while Jalen/Tua were here goes against the competitive nature he had and why he was so good for us when it became his turn.

My point is we shouldn’t write players off until they’ve left the team. Suggesting that if Simpson doesn’t win the job this year it’s over with who’s ahead and coming in just doesn’t make sense when history tells us that players will develop and improve the next year. With that logic the freshman here now and incoming freshman won’t be any better right?

Mac had to rebuild himself, after getting that DUI his freshman year. I don't think he was ready to challenge for the starting job, until 2019. But Tua was at his best to start that year. There just wasn't any controversy. I don't recall any. And Mac quietly waited his turn.
