Nutt hires Nix

Some what of a surprise, but maybe SOS was not real happy with the way the USC defense folded down the stretch and Nix saw the handwriting on the wall. Good hire for Nutt though.

FWIW-

I don't remember if I read these tidbits on here (the internet), heard them on the radio, or at the watercooler. Regardless:

-Someone suggested that SOS was indeed less than pleased with Nix and really wanted to replace him at USC, even to the point of campaigning for Nix to get the USM job.

-Also heard someone familiar with the USM program say that Nix wasn't highly regarded in Hattisburg for his coaching ability and never was considered to be a serious candidate.

Here's hoping for continued mediocrity at Ole Miss...

I think that is right. The South Carolina defense really fell apart on down the stretch, and there were a lot of rumblings about him not returning. You can rest assured that he did not voluntarily leave South Carolina for Ole Miss with no pressure added. I don't think he was forced out, but I do believe he saw the writing on the wall. Ole Miss is very much a step down from South Carolina.

No worries there. Ole Miss will definitely improve under Nutt -- on the other hand, it's not like you can do any worse than 0-8 -- but he was never able to win the SEC at Arkansas, and it's highly unlikely that he will be able to do that in what is likely a tougher job. The state of Mississippi turns out more talent than Arkansas, though it usually doesn't go to Ole Miss, but aside from that everything else points to Ole Miss as a step down from Arkansas. Johnny Reb hasn't won the SEC since the week after Kennedy was shot, and you shouldn't expect Nutt to change that.

I know he wants to be a head coach someday and in his home state. He was a wonderful player at Southern Miss (USM). He is also a very good defensive coordinator. The SEC West has just got harder to play in. Petrino to Arkansas, Nix to Ole Miss. LSU currently is the only untold story thus far. Keep an eye on S. Carolina after next season. :BigA:

I know that Coach Spurrier has had enough of the players being arrested, some numerous times. He might want to see fulmer on some advice on how to stay afloat. It is harder to stay afloat without the blubber.

Nix is a very good coach and Spurrier is a great coach.......probably just not much chemistry between the two. Both are better off.

Nix is heading in the wrong direction taking the Ole Miss position imo, really wish he had tried to shoot a little higher.

I guess that means Reggie Herring is available (unless he goes to Ole Miss as a position coach). I've never been overly impressed by Herring's defenses, but he is a heckuva recruiter. Perhaps Petrino will retain him at Arky (a move the players there would like).

You might want to edit the title and specify Tyrone Nix. Initially I thought it was referring to Patrick Nix, the offensive coordinator at Miami.

I was thinking, how does this guy keep getting jobs. lol

All of these hires just goes to prove that winning the SEC will extremely tough and going undefeated will take an absolute ton of hard work, luck, talent, luck, and more luck. LSU at least was able to make it to the NC game despite losing two games but we can't always assume that we'll continue to have football seasons like we had this season on the national level. If that was the case, I'd want Alabama to stay below #5 until they win the SECCG.
