I've been thinking about the next OC and while I have no names to mention the consensus opinion seems to be that we need an innovator like Kiffin or Sark was, but I just watched Georgia win back to back championships with an offense that features a great stable of RB's and a game manager QB who was pretty good at throwing to the TE which sounds pretty basic to me. If we can get an O-Line that can block like Georgia's can I don't think we really need to get too flashy on offense.
I agree for the most part, but I would differ calling Stetson Bennett a game manager. I can’t stand the guy but he was a playmaker for sure. Did a great job throwing guys open in clogged passing lines. He was a different dude this year for sure. But honestly Monken is a difference maker for them. That guy keeps your defense off balance with a balanced attack.

I do believe we had a little physicality in our bowl game that I had not seen this year at all. Give K State credit they came out hitting and laying some big licks and we didn’t respond well early. Then we woke up on both sides of the ball (especially the db’s). I hope that mentality spills over to next year.

Would love to be an audience to the CNS's thought process. I'm thinking he's known for some time what he wants and who he wants... (and may well have that lined up)
But, it's a puzzle... and he has to secure the pieces as he goes...
Thinking not of statistics here but more along the lines of qualities or characteristics, I'm thinking that in considering his hires he wants maybe...
some youth for the energy/enthusiasm/connecting with players
some age/experience to help guide the above
must have exceptional on-field teaching ability
specific skillsets in terms of position coaching
..... and then, once determining what he wants, finding the people (and the right personalities) who can accomplish it together as a staff
Maybe we could get CNS to tweet his thoughts as he goes... :)
Definitely ain’t tryin to rain on your parade, but Saban thought the sun rose and set in PG’s backside. Even the best miss sometimes.
There are some on here closer to the program than I (mostly everyone, I’m just a fan), but I think the names being bandied about for potential DC hire are all very competent choices, and I’d be surprised if the eventual coordinator isn’t among that group. But only one person knows right now (or is planning on one) and we’ll know when he wants us to know.
Any day now will be fine with me. 😁😂🤨🤣

Did you just call Betson Stennat a "game changing" qb??

6th in passing yards, 4th in QBR. While he should never scare anyone with his arm strength, he made the plays when it counted. ESPN
5th in total offense with only Bowers as a real star.

As predictable as BOB has been, he put our offense into a position to win every game the last 2 years. Yes, even the championship game. It’s not his fault our backup WRs couldn’t catch.

If our defense is even remotely close to the Smart/Pruitt years, we are undefeated in 2021 and 2022. We should be looking at 3 straight undefeated seasons…

I cannot overstate how happy I am right now.
I've lost 37 pounds, and I'm almost ready to attempt to do the
Snoopy Happy Dance. (Not really)

Not sure our floor joist would make it thru that torture.

Seriously...
I just want to have Coordinators who call Offense and Defense that will catch the other team off balance.

Well, BOB's and Pete's plays always had the opposition falling forward (making tackles or yards). Does that count?

The thing with Armstrong....his defenses at Southern Miss played with attitude. They got after teams. Aggressive and mean.

That alone is a good sign.
Maybe it's old fashioned of me, but I like MEAN DEFENSES.
There is a lot to be said for knocking the other guy on his butt and stepping on him on your way over. There is a lot to be said for a OL pushing their Defensive line back 5-7 yards.
(Yes... I've always been a in your face kind of guy)

I've known you a long time, Dan and this is the first time I realized you were the aggressive type!!!!!

I remember some team Bama was playing back in the late 70s moving down down the field to Bama 10 yard line. Alabama had 3 personal foul calls to help them get there. They wound up missing a 30 something yard field goal. Bama’s defense got mean with them. They were scared to go to the sideline an face coach Bryant after the three fouls was what more than one said. I like toughness more than meanness. Especially the way they call games today.

One of the aspects we haven't talked about on this thread is the fall-off on recruiting/development of defensive and offensive talent. Despite the recruiting rankings, we have entire units on both sides of the ball that would have not seen the field on our championship teams.

The drop-off is most alarming on the defense -- a sustained mediocrity from the defensive line through the inside linebackers to the defensive backs. There hasn't been a Quinnen Williams, Daron Payne, Minkah or Eddie Jackson for a while now. If To'o To'o was the best we had at middle linebacker, well, enough said.

Now the big band-aid that covered most of the problems -- outstanding QB play from Tua to Mac to Bryce -- maybe falling off.

Hopefully, a new DC can make a difference. But the truth of the matter is we need a lot more players performing to the level of their billing.
