Question: Office pot luck what is your opinion?

We have an accounting/finance office of around 25, with all different types of personalities and backgrounds. Honestly, we're not a very tight-knit group and most people are at the age that they don't "get into" stuff like office potlucks, department socials, etc. Yet, our department head seems to feel the need to keep planning them when all that happens is, about 10 minutes into them, people take their plates and go back to their office. LOL! As I've asked in management meetings before "What's the point?!". We spend all that time asking people to help setup the conference room, getting things, and making things to only fix our plates and have the overwhelming majority of the staff go back to their offices and eat. It has long been overly obvious people don't like doing them, outside of eating the food. But yet we keep doing them...
