I could never be confused with being a soccer fan. But I am a sports fan and a patriot, and I think it needs to be noted when our country does something outstanding on an international playing field.

I'd like to congratulate the USA soccer team on defeating Spain 2-0 in the Confederations Cup to advance to the finals today. Apparently this was a super mismatch and not in our favor.
U.S. shocks No. 1 Spain in Confed Cup semis - Soccer- nbcsports.msnbc.com

Call it a miracle on grass — maybe not the World Cup, but still an American soccer echo of the U.S. hockey team’s upset of the Soviet Union at the 1980 Lake Placid Olympics.
I especially enjoyed hearing the results after listening to Colin Coward (only station I can hear sports news during morning break) this morning rail on and on about how the Spaniards were going to work our team over. Apparently he's a soccer fan and expert on the subject, as he is on so many other things. Good to see our boys do the US proud and make Coward eat a little crow.

BinB dont be silly. Soccer's true name is Association Football (as invented by us Brits) and this is the football forum!!

Ok, ok I'm stretching things. But it is a marvellous result for the USA team against Spain which has been unbeatable for quite a while. It was totally unexpected by the the rest of the world. If not the best, it has got to be close to the best win EVER for the US football team.

It was definitely a great victory for the U.S.

But still, anyone who walked away thinking we were the most skilled team on the pitch was clearly mistaken.

Either way its great to move forward with U.S. Soccer (hopefully at least). I would love to see some momentum built off of this. They can play quite well when they pull it all together.

Huh? Bubba, there ain't no pitching in soccer.

Seriously, I don't think that's a point of contention. The point is, that our overachievers just stood up and pulled off a David against Goliath. Spain hadn't been beaten internationally since Nov 2006, a span of 35 matches.

Congrats to the US team.

However, this is still America and that's soccer, not football.

Rolando McClain plays football. The fellows in the shorts do not.

Good luck to 'em, however.

I am an American football fan but enjoy soccer as well. Having two daughters on Club Level Futbol teams I have learned to love the "beautiful game" played on the pitch. This was a great win for the U.S. team and I hope the enthusiasm for soccer will grow as a result. The U.S. womens team was a catalyst for soccer in America in the 90's. The enthusiam waned for the past few years and the numbers of kids wanting to play has dropped. Hopefully, this will be another momentum builder.

Sport is sport regardless of the nature of the game, exercise is vital in todays world of cutbacks in recess and P.E., and as we all know not every kid can strap on a helmet and shoulder pads and be a star.

contrary to popular belief, it's possible to be fanatical about soccer and football.
Agreed. The only sport that can match the intensity and fanaticism of SEC football is European football (soccer). The FIFA World Cup and the UEFA European Cup are incredibly fun to watch.

Great victory for USA.
