I don't think this is accurate, regardless as to how things were phrased. If Lane doesn't hire him, he is still at Bama. <Shudder>.

I don't that was gonna happen. In an interview on/just after Selection Sunday last season, Coach Saban mentioned that the coaching staff hadn't developed good personal relationships with players over the last few years. And we lost a few good guys on the D side to the portal and early draft. If Lane doesn't hire him, he is still at Bama. <Shudder>.
We will just have to agree to disagree on this one. One way to think about it is Golding oversaw a very measurable decline in the Bama defense. If he did that with the level of natural talent he had to work with at Bama what will he do with less talent over the long haul. Playing again the same teams he played against at Bama. You saw it tonight. You're letting your dislike blind you.
Gol*ing won't field an elite defense, but he's a good DC for a vast majority of teams out there, including OM. OM doesn't have the same goals Bama does, they don't have the same standards. They certainly don't have the same players. Saban has missed on young guys, Gol*ing is a known quantity - not good enough for Bama, but very good for most.
He's a genius on defensive strategy and probably better suited to the NFL. I don't think he's a good fit for the college game and I think the difference in performance and effort between 2022 and 2023 shows it. We could not get off the field on 3rd downs last year. We do that, now. We had mind-numbing penalties last year. There are far fewer now. Steele is a college DC. Golding isn't.You're letting your dislike blind you.

He certainly did. Lol.Hold on. I thought the only reason Kiffin hired Golding was to do us a favor. 🤷â€Â♂ï¸Â

The goal of every team in the SEC west should be to win the division and I’m sure that’s Kiffin’s goal. He made a mistake with this hire just like saban did. He’s mediocre at best, and bad at fundamentals. When you have inferior talent overall that should be an emphasis for your team to be sound as possible. Golding doesn’t bring that to the table.
You may be right, and I do agree about the comparison of the programs. That being said I would have gone after a young guy with less experience and what I felt was more potential upside. He may not stay forever, but he will leave me in a better place than he found me if the hire works out. I just struggle to settle for mediocrity, and that is Golding at his best.Realistically who do you see Ole Miss hiring? I mean let’s seriously analyze who Kiffin’s DC’s are:
1) Durkin- No one would touch him after the death of a player under his watch
2) Patridge- You have never heard of him
3) Golding
Out of all 3 Golding might be the best coming in based purely off recruiting ability and experience at a big job. Everyone keeps acting like Ole Miss is an elite job and that reb fans should expect seasons like this every year. That is just not realistic. There is a huge talent gap between them and Alabama, Georgia, and LSU that beating just one is a major accomplishment.
On the offensive side of the ball Kiffin might be able to draw in some guys just purely because Kiffin is a known offensive mind, but defensively Golding might be the biggest guy they can realistically find.
I cannot believe I'm actually here defending Gol*ing. You may be right, and I do agree about the comparison of the programs. IMO, his greatest weaknesses were his inability to coach the ILB position (Saban is at fault for not making a change there) and not knowing how to leverage edge rushers.I cannot believe I'm actually here defending Gol*ing.
But c'mon - even the worst years under Gol*ing Bama fielded top25 defenses. Four of the five seasons he was here Bama was in the top 15 in scoring and total defense. The only outlier was total defense when Bama ranked 32nd - that was 2020.
He's literally a very good DC, just not up to Bama's standards. One can admit someone is unable to operate at the highest levels (Bama) while not casting undo aspersions. His body of work speaks for itself - he's a good DC, just not good enough to work at the highest levels.
Don't be surprised if he eventually ends up at another premier program and does well.
I'm 100% thrilled he is gone - I've been pretty vocal about the need to boot him for the last few seasons - but just because he couldn't do what we needed doesn't mean he sucks.
There are lots of things I can nitpick about, but he's simply not mediocre or bad. He's just not what Bama needs. No biggie, glad he's gone, but he's an amazing recruiter and he's forgotten more about CFB than I will ever know.IMO, his greatest weaknesses were his inability to coach the ILB position (Saban is at fault for not making a change there) and not knowing how to leverage edge rushers.
