When I was at Ft. Hood (Texas), an artillery platoon shelled a town neighboring the military base for about 30 minutes. Not continuously, thank God, but every few minutes a 155mm round would land in someone's yard or field. I'm sure you can imagine the uproar.

This was 2000-2001 timeframe.

A funny thing is that this incident was a running joke in the defunct Calvin and Hobbes comic strip. Calvin was always (mentally) blasting his school with rockets from an F-16.
Calvin and Hobbes is defunct? I thought that guy just got tired of doing it. It appeared quite popular to me...

Yep, Bill Watterson quit drawing the daily and Sunday strips some time ago. He's been making a comfortable living lately by reprinting old strips in book form. Even these oldies are still popular.

Watterson burned out arguing with his syndicate over deadlines and the arbitrary space set aside for his Sunday strips. The space, of course, was dictated by the needs of the various newspapers and there wasn't much the syndicate could do about it.

Ah, dear old Fort Hood. When I was taking basic there they lined up our battalion for a night-fire exercise. We were all primed with tracer ammo, even the .50s. In the process we managed to set fire to one of little scrub-brush-covered mountains. We spent the rest of the night playing fireman. :D
