Re: OT Cyrus Kouandjio Update (1/6)

I'm still trying to figure out why all these high quality recruits keep bringing up New Mexico as a possible school in the running. They are awful but still they are brought up on possible teams to sign with. Something fishy is going on over there. Some highly touted recruit signed with them last year witch baffled me.

Mike Locksley is the reason. He's a recruiting machine. He brought in some great prospects at Illinois, while on Ron Zook's staff. He did the same at Florida. Was a big reason for the talent that Urban Meyer inherited in 2005.

He's not being mysterious, he is a young man who is milking the system for what it is. He'll end up at Alabama, but he's making the other teams "on his list" feel like they have a shot. No mystery with him. He's playing "the game."
I remember last year when he and Arie visited Bama......he loved Bama even more than his brother. I figure it would take something catastrophic to keep him from playing for Bama.

I agree with you but he went from loving it to saying his OV with Bama was ok and his brother being there doesn't mean that much to him. From everything I was hearing about him this past year I would think that he would help Bama recruit some high profile players and give us a verbal somewhat early. Who knows? Might have already done all those things and we don't even know it

He's announcing on NSD on ESPN, which might be a reson he isn't doing too much talking for or about Bama. A thing to remember - Arie was supposed to announce on NSD but went public either Monday or Tuesday before NSD.

Also, IIRC Arie was the same way last year. He didn't do to much talking, never got over amped about any school publically. I think it might be something both do.

I don't see how he ends up anywhere but Bama.

Locksley is from the DC area and he is very well respected in that area. Arie also visited NM last year before deciding on the Tide. If I recall correctly Arie gave his committment the day before signing day so not a huge surprise Cyrus is waiting late in the process to make his decision. I think he will ultimately make his committment to the Tide on NSD.

You are correct. Arie did visit UNM and was supposed to wait until NSD to announce but proceeded to announce a day or two before NSD. Seems like Cyrus is doing the same, but he is also scheduled to announce on ESPNU on NSD.

Re: OT Cyrus Kouandjio Update (1/6)

My thinking is that so much of the recruiting game is perception. Would we rather have a National Signing Day where even fans like us know everyone who is and isn't on board? Or would we rather have a National Signing Day where the suspense of guys like the #1 OT creates buzz and attention for Alabama.

It would be nice to know what the recruiting staff knows, but in the day and age of recruiting media, even some "sure things" like Cyrus will end up being mysteries, just because it's better for Bama that way.

Unfortunately it is against the NCAA Recruiting Regulations for the Bama recruiting staff to say anything publically about any prospects until they sign an LOI. That is what makes following recruiting so frustrating. Keeping up with recruiting is tough. It is riddled with false rumors, misquotes and leading questions in interviews. Erroneous tweets, prank facebook posts, he said, she said and literally childish game playing by some of the prospects.

I find Cyrus Kouandjio's approach to be refreshing to say the least. He is forthright and honest and keeping his cards close to his vest. To me his situation is easy to read. I think if the staff had any real question about where his heart is then they would be hotly pursuing other OT prospects. That is not happening and not to mention the competition for him is not that threatening in my opinion, so rest easy.

Did Cyrus have a good relationship with Coach Pendry or was someone else his recruiter? How will the new hiring effect us?

In Cyrus' interview from the UA game he said he called Coach Sal to ask why we beatdown MSU so badly. That could mean that they have a close relationship.
I have heard that Cyrus and Coach Sal are close. Cyrus recruiting coach is Coach Pendry but I don't believe the fact that he is retiring will have any real negative impact with Kouandjio.
