Foley's D.J. Fluker picked for national all-star game
Foley lineman D. J. Fluker has been selected to play in the U.S. Army All-American Bowl, an invitation-only all-star game that attracts some of the nation's best prep players. The the 2009 U.S. Army All-American Bowl is scheduled for Jan. 3, at the Alamodome in San Antonio.

A news conference to formally announced Fluker's selection is scheduled for Friday at 8:15 a.m. at the Foley High gymnasium. The event will include a school assembly, and representatives from the U.S. Army and the game are scheduled to attend, Watson said.
I look for LB Nico Johnson to also be selected in the near future.

Looks like the U. S. Army All-American game is getting most of the top prospects this year where last year, the Army game was dominated by Notre Dame prospects/commits and most everyone else went to the UnderArmor game.

I haven't been keeping up enough, where are we planning on playing him?
Planning and doing are two different things. Most here think he will end up as an OT at Bama. It was said early on in the process after he camped at Bama that CNS wants him at DT and CJP wants him as an OT. This season at Foley D.J. Fluker's position was changed to OT and he has performed very well. He is now considered one of the best OT's in the country by most experts. I still remember reading last January about how Fluker and LSU DT commit Chris Davenport went at at the Scout combine in Mobile. Fluker bloodied Davenports nose in a match-up in the trenches. I am starting to get in line with the 'hope he ends up as an OT' bunch myself. Of course only CNS can really answer this question, and right now he may not even know. ;)

The thing I would like to know is, is he a great run-blocking lineman, or can he actually pass block. The pass blocking is somewhat of a weakness for our line.

What happens to Tyler Love if Fluker and Massie are the OT's?
In the weight room getting stronger to better compete for the job.

It's not coincidence that John Michael Boswell is the first OT off the bench over higher-rated freshmen Tyler Love and Barrett Jones and redshirt sophomore Taylor Pharr.

I just talked today with Mike Roote, who happens to be the down marker guy official for Foley home football games. Mike's daughter, who is a 12th grader, happens to be a trainer for the Foley varsity football team.

After last night's home game against Alma Bryant, Mike could not seem to contain himself about Fluker. But his main theme about Fluker is what an all around great kid he is, about how all the young players look up to him, and how he takes time out to talk with youngsters who idolize him. I asked Mike how he would compare Fluker to Julio Jones, and he said that Fluker is much more outgoing than Julio, and that, besides, the main thing about Julio was, and is, his astounding athleticism. Which in no way is meant to downplay Julio's own outstanding leadership and influence on other players.

Fluker, you may know, comes from the New Orleans Ninth Ward, which was flooded during Katrina. His family was uprooted, moved to the Mississippi Gulf Coast, then to Mobile, where he played for McGill-Toolin High School, and then moved on over here to Foley.

To me, D. J. Fluker is one of those rare human beings who, because of his athletic ability, is able to rise up out of a background of less than ideal circumstances -- someone who because of his growing up experiences knows what is important in life -- sort of like Bear Bryant, and Nick Saban. You might look into the face of Fluker, in the latest Rivals photo -- and see what I mean. He goes all out in practice and during games, and pancakes his share of opponents, but off the field he is a model citizen. Can't wait to see him at Bama.
