I live in Virginia, and my best friend is a HUGE West Virginia fan. This dude is the only other college football fan that rivals my devotion to Bama. For this reason.. I kinda pull for WVU out of respect for his fandom.. I suppose it helps that WVU and Bama are not rivals at all... Also.. it feels pretty good to know that at least I have BAMA pride and tradition... poor old WVU ain't got too much...

Pacman Jones and Major Harris (QB in the late 80s), other than that don't know much about WV. Anyone ever seen the movie Wrong Turn?

My observation is that most teams have a 'core' fan-base who are as rabid as anyone else. They all think their fans are the classiest and their team the best and etc.

But those teams who have 'been to the top' more than once and who contend for conference titles seem to have more rabid fans than the others. I work with a man who can tell you something about every game Bama has played during his life (he is 50 yrs old). Just pick a year and a game and he will tell you some stats and the final score. Amazing! I wonder how many teams have fans like that?

When I finished graduate school at the University of Virginia and started teaching at Alabama, I had no idea what it meant to be a REAL football fan. My undergraduate degree was from Wake Forest. If you check back in history you will find that during the sixties Wake Forest and Virginia were the two losingest teams in America. You can imagine the football culture shock when I arrived in Tuscaloosa and attended my first football game. The association with the University was enough to make on a huge football fan, but I also had some help.
Soon after arriving in TTown we became friends with a guy similar to the one described earlier. This man knew everything, and I mean everything, about Alabama football. He still does. I recall going to his brother's funeral in another city in the state. I will never forget that. The deceased was lying in his coffin all decked out in his crimson blazer. Every pall bearer was wearing a crimson blazer. And, all the flowers were crimson and white. At that point I began to get a feel for what being an Alabama fan was really like. That Alabama walking encyclopedia is still a very dear friend, even though we visit very infrequently.
My two sons were born at Druid City Hospital. Years later, after we moved to NC both of them attended UNC Chapel Hill. One of them became a big Carolina fan, but the older one never did. His room at Chapel Hill was always decorated in Crimson and White with Alabama memorabilia.
Every school has its die hard fans. But after having lived in several states and many towns, I can testify that none have such a large cadre of true die hards as Alabama. Take NC for example. Here I have to contend with Carolina fans who love the round ball. However, I simply respond by telling them that to a true sports fan basketball is a sissy game played as an interlude between football seasons. The only thing that really counts is football. That can be easily demonstrated by pointing out the amount of money involved in the different athletic programs, womens and mens, and the extent to which all of them are supported by football. In the SEC I would say us and TN are the most passionate and loyal to our teams, but we are the most logical by far than the coonticks.

I pray that I will live to see another run like the 70's to witness a "rabid" Bama nation. After what the normal fan has been through, due to no fault of his/her own, can you imagine? Can you imagine!

I want to have my standing reservations in New Orleans renewed. It can happen.

Depends on what you mean by "rabid". If you mean devotion to their team and a passion for their team that it consumes much of their life, then us Bama fans are as "rabid" as they come. If you mean "rabid" as in loud and passionate from a vocal support standpoint inside the stadium, then we are quite a ways down the line. We have too many folks who sit on their hands, yell at the person in front of them for daring to stand up, and and basically sit in the stands like judges waiting for the lowly football players to please them into responding. We could use a little work on our vocal support IMHO.

Storm Surge...

Like your thoughts. At games, it's tough to beat UT and LSU in the SEC for noise and downright hostility in their houses. I would have to put UF in the category of being "rabid" about their team also.

I really don't find fans to be as rabid as ours.

Like someone said above, that story about the man dying with his friends and family leaving Crimson flowers and such...

Whenever I go to Baton Rouge, their fans are rabid in the fact they all get drunk and excited but the feeling just isn't the same.

I think a lot of us fans are as "rabid" as you guys especially the ones that are alumni and closely connected to the school. That is why I like this site so much, you can feel the loyalty coming from the desktop. With all you guys accomplishments on the football field it is naturally you feel a deep sense of pride. Except for a few belligerent posters ( I have them on my site too) this is a classy place to visit and discuss cfb.

I am a HUGE Nebraska fan and have to agree with most posters here, all the major teams have a rabid core of supporters that cheer for their team with passion. I have been to many different venues and they are all pretty good. I will say this though, as far as tradition and good ole college football atmosphere Bama and notre dame are a bit ahead of the rest. Game day atmosphere was phenomenal!!!!
