There was always a lot of talk back in the late 1970's to early 1980's about "who would follow the Bear" when he retired. Perkins, Dye (before he took the Auburn job), Richard Williamson, Bobby Bowden, Jackie Sherrill among many others.

Was it offered to Dye after he had been at Auburn two years? I doubt he was in the conversation before they chose Perkins. However, if Dye would have stayed at Wyoming, who knows.

Joab Thomas hired Perkins supposedly from a list of recommendations Coach Bryant had given him. As far as I know, no one ever really knew who was included on that list.

I will say this he made his mark on Bama fans, I think his arrogance of being or trying to be a better Coach than CPB has not endeared him to the Bama nation. He could have handled the pulling out of Birmingham and the Iron Bowl in a more respectful way to the city of Bham. I dont care for him and if he has anything to do with the Aubarn program I hope he continues to have a lot of input as to the direction the football program is taking.

I had once heard that a few people close to Coach Bryant had a conversation with and mentioned a future retirement and replacement. People who were very close to him who could ask that type of question without getting the wrath. It has been said that Coach Bryant was fond of Dye and even tried to talk him out of taking the AU job. I have never heard if the coach that Coach Bryant wanted to succeed him was Dye or Coach Gene Stallings but those closet to Coach Bryant have speculated that both men were at the top of his list.

I've always thought when Bama never gave Dye a shot of becoming our HC it lit a dark fire in his heart to bring Bama down or not stand in the the way of The Barners that tried bringing Bama down..Dye was actually a really really good HC & I honestly thought he would've made a great HC here as Coach Bryant's replacement..But..When he became HC in Lee County that pretty much erased any kinda chance Dye had of becoming our HC..A snowball had a better chance of coming back intact from a vacation visiting hell..

I don't have a link, and can't recall where I read it, but my memory is that Paul Bryant, Jr. told Coach Stallings on his first day as Bama's Head Coach he was the one CPB wanted to to replace him. TIFWIW.

It has always been said that Coach Stallings was Coach Bryant's first choice, but he was coaching for the Cowboys at that time. Don't know if Dye was ever offered or not. So we wound up with Perkins who lasted 4 years and bolted for the NFL, kind of a reverse CNS.

Did his reminiscing venture into Eric Ramsey's disclosures having impact on his qualifications?

I think Bryant's wishes were ignored about a replacement because TPTB thought he was too sick/senile to make an informed decision.

I'd like to think CPD might have been slightly above the open payment of players that he got in trouble for at AU, had he been coach at UA. I doubt it, however. The lure to cut corners is so overpowering for a young, hungry coach. It would have taken a will of iron, like CGS hads, to tell everybody to stick it and that things would be done the right way. In the environment he found himself in, Dye found it all to easy to rationalize the systemic cheating.

Not to say we have always been as pure as the driven snow; no program has. But, when the head coach is personally, along with the staff, involved in blatant cheating, well, that's what you DON'T want from your program.
