Can't really argue with much of what he said. However, I don't necessarily agree that the roster was overrated. Rather, it turns out that a not-insignificant portion of the supremely-talented recruits brought in the last few years never fully invested in the program, which likely translates to a diminished-looking product to the naked eye.

I think what Pate is referring to is the 247 talent composite rating that had Alabama at #1, and some in the media, including Pate himself, touted it as meaning Bama is the most talented team in the country. I think we can safely say that is not the case. We had more talent than most, but no way were we the most talented team in the country this year. In that sense, the roster was overrated.

thing is, due to his main point of us being held hostage by inept QB play, we don't really know how talented the roster is or what their potential really was.

When the QB doesn't give on IZR/OZR plays when he should, RBs aren't getting the runs they should.

When the QB calls the wrong protections and alignments for the OL, it's going to make them look bad.

When the QB is unable to execute the most basic concepts of a passing offense, the WRs and TEs aren't going to be able to produce like they should.

I often disagree with alot of Big Picture takes Pate has but this is one I’m in full agreement with him on.

I think towards the end of Saban’s tenure he valued ace recruiters over good development coaches. Whether that was out of necessity amid speculation on his impending retirement is up for debate. But we never developed great teams and lived primarily off talent.

I think in many ways the 2023 and 2024 are almost identical in that they played way too close too often with inferior teams. The difference was that we had more lucky bounces in 23 than 24. I mean if Beck doesn’t fumble a simple exchange to the running back and Freeze rushes 4 instead of 2 then in all likelihood we are playing in back to back Florida based bowl games.

I think Deboer is a guy that needs time to build his own culture and beating Auburn his first year does take considerable stress off his back. So the question is more on if Bama is going to give him the time to build.

Well, we're not the only ones having to reset wrt roster talent. If anyone wants to know why UGA's defense has taken a step back look no further than today's NFC championship game where Jordan Davis and Jalen Carter are giving Daniels fits. They're still trying to replace those two and they haven't.

I would agree with you if he didn't have such bad showings against Vandy, OU, and Michigan. Those three games (and how we lost them) put a lot of sour on his first season. The fans have no choice but to be patient because his huge buyout says he's going to be given time. But I don't know how much time the fans are going to give him in the court of public opinion seeing how we lost the above three games.

And that's just it....its not that we lost those games.....its that we looked completely unprepared and no apparent way to adjust. We looked totally lost.

How we looked vs Michigan is more upsetting because we had so long to prep. How do you come out there with no apparent plan or a backup plan if things don't work out.

And the OU game....if the defense doesn't hold or OU had a better offense....that game turns into an absolute mauling of epic proportions. Probably something along the lines of 45-3.

Well, Pate finally came out and said the team held Saban hostage last season during the USF game. He finally said it and admitted that is why he feels Milroe wasn't pulled this season. If they would have done that to Saban they'd definitely do it to DeBoer. WOW, JUST WOW. Thank God that is now over.

I have no idea if Pate has a source on it or if he’s just openly echoing what many of us have tried to relay for 1.5 years.

I’ve never understood why so many other members here have acted like it was the wildest of rumors because if you watch the way that USF week played out and the game itself and the aftermath…

I mean the whole ordeal was as plain as the day on your face.

But Pate’s words won’t change minds either.

If people can watch Ty gets clobbered off the snap and then OL just step over him like he’s roadkill and that doesn’t leap off the screen then I don’t know what could open peoples eyes and mind.

My guess is he had someone on the inside let him know. When he started using the term "held the team hostage" in several previous videos, it told me what he'd been told he was now going to start talking about. He NEVER mentioned anything like this during the season. But strangely enough, once the season ended he was more explicit about it.
