Players that never reached their potential

Lets list the players that showed flashes of brilliance on the field but for various reasons never were able to reach their potential. I'd prefer to not discuss the players that were highly recruited but were busts in college. (e.g. Albert Means)

Kerry Goode - This guy was something special until he tore up his knee against Boston College. His injury probably cost us 4-5 games that year including the BC game.

Joe King - Drugs, enough said. I believe he started some as a freshman but was kicked off the team before his sophomore season. I've lost track of him but I believe he spent the next 15 years in and out of prison.

Darrel Blackburn - A medical problem kept him from playing his senior season. He appeared to be ready to have an All-SEC year and potentially an NFL career.

Kareem McNeil - Automobile accident.

Chris Hood - Grades?

Michael Myers - Agent?

i think chris hood was legally blind in one eye so i'd say he reached his potential. plus, he had some great games.

michael myers has been starting/playing in the pros for 6-7yrs now.

but good list.

(Brian?) Steger - what talent at running the ball. I suppose he didn't have enough of the total package (blocking; receiving; play retention). I never really heard what his problem was, but he could sure run the ball.

RTR!!!!

Certainly not anything against this man, but Marvin Constant would have been great! He is the man!!!

I almost hate to say this because I like him, but Freddie Kitchens although he was a decent QB, probably should have stuck with baseball. Did't he have a fastball in the mid 90s. Maby he could have made it to the Bigs. He was a gutsy QB, and got a lot of wins for us , and I am sure he's proud of his career, but can't you almost see him on the mound. A Roger Clemmons clone,(I can see it).

On a slightly different note...here's some real positive news.

Anthony Madison came in to the program as a Prop 48 player, remember? He is graduating in 3 1/2 years. Congrats to Anthony!

Chris Hood was a good player in spite of being blind in one eye but I believe he had to drop out of school before his senior year which is why I mentioned him. I think he and Steven Harris (also from Hazlewood) had grade problems. Someone can correct me if I'm wrong.

I hate that Ozell Powell never made it to campus. He dominated the AL-MS HS all star game and most likely would have been a dominant DL.

Another guy that I can't remember his name was the LB that stated late his freshman year alongside Travis Carroll. I believe he was from North Jackson HS. He and Carroll had a great game against AU in 1997 (Scissum fumble) but was kicked off the team the next year and never returned.

I agree about Myers in the pro's but I was intending this topic to be about players that never reached their potential at Bama. Since Myers didn't get to play his senior year, I included him on my list although he has had a very solid pro career.

Pierre Goode is another person that never seemed to put it all together. He probably was over-hyped coming out of HS but still had a lot of ability. He had a long TD reception from Jeff Dunn against UcheaT in 1987 and a long kickoff return for a TD against Ole Miss in 1988 (brick-thru-the-window game) but never did live up to his ability.

Sage Spree, OL Highschool class of 94. He was all-state the States top rated OL for that year. He never started a game.

On the defensive side of the ball that year, Eric Kerley was the top Defensive player in the state. He was decent at best during his stay at Bama.

I just remember them because the came to bama the same year I did.

Interesting that a lot of players being mentioned were on teams with 10+ wins.

How about Brandon Miree? I know he transferred but even at Pitt he was never the superstar that even Shaun Alexander thought he would be.

QB - Gene Newberry, from Ark. I think finally played some at TE.</font>
If Tidehead is around, he might be able to tell you about Gene(His dad works with Gene). Anyways, he was supposed to come in at Quarterback, but when Perkins left, Curry told him no. As a result, he was forced to pick a new position, and became a TE.
