SALT LAKE CITY — The grizzly bears at Hogle Zoo are a little busy these days.
Tucked into the far west end in the Rocky Shores area, the three bears—Koda, Lou Lou and Dolly—are all working on their own den for the winter—ready to hibernate.
"They thought they needed a den, so they made their own den," Hogle Zoo's Primary bear keeper Joanne Randinitis said. "It's not something we can really control. They wanted to do and they're going to do it."
Within the last week, the bears have literally dug a hole in a dirt berm within their confines. Dolly, the smallest of the three, pokes her head out and stays put as if to protect it from strangers.
In fact, a defensive instinct triggered as reporters jockeyed outside the fence to get some pictures: A fast look and a growl got the point across.
The den is about 4 feet high and 8 feet deep, started from scratch, if you will, as the weather cooled.

College football season almost over.....time to hibernate!

Grizzly Bears at Hogle Zoo build their own den........

I believe these are the cubs from the

This is AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Grizzly man Mark Dumas, 60, is the only man in the world who can touch a polar bear and the only man in the world that can swim with a polar bear. And as these incredible pictures show Grizzly Man, the fearless polar bear handler from Abbotsford, British Columbia, even goes for dip in his swimming pool where he and 16-year-old polar bear Agee enjoy a watery cuddle together. Grizzly Man Mark and wife Dawn, 60, train the 60-stone (800lb) friendly polar bear - the world's largest land predator - to star in high-budget TV adverts. Agee the polar bear has even performed in movies like 'Alaska' in 1995 when she was just a few weeks old. With his incredibly intimate bond Grizzly Man Mark Dumas wrestles on the grass with polar bear Agee, kisses her, puts his head in the polar bear's huge jaws, and even bear hugs her as she rears up on her hind legs to over seven feet. Mark and Dawn have owned Agee since she was six weeks old and the colossal polar bear even lived in their home as a cub where she played with the family dogs and was bottle fed.

Fantastic thread.

My only encounter with a bear was in Gatlinburg. I was sitting on the deck of our cabin when an emaciated black bear came snooping around. It was only 4 or 5 feet away but i was up on the deck so i wasnt scared. He look more like a black lab. They were in the midst of a pretty bad drought. The bears were pretty desperate.

My father did some work in Alaska in the 60s. It involved being out in the wilderness and camping. They were doing something for the park service, I cant really remember. It wasn't skilled labor - they just needed college guys to do some basic stuff to help out the rangers. It was fairly remote and one day they encountered a polar bear going through their camp. One of the other college kids pulled out his rifle intending to shoot it. The ranger said, "No son, you'll just make him mad" . They ended up spending an uncomfortable night away from their camp waiting on the bear to leave.

I too think Timothy Treadwell was a fool. However, his death was pretty bad. His poor girlfriend... I shudder to think about her final moments.

Time to revive this thread.......lot of interesting and entertaining previous posts......plus this sad news.....

I hate losing the pandas. I heard on the news last night the only place in the US where you can see pandas now is Zoo Atlanta. I may have to make the trip.

Had near ground level end zone tickets at Legion Field for Bama - Tenn during the Johnny Majors era. Coach Bryant leaned against the near goal post in the same fashion while the team warmed up. Several Tenn cheerleaders came over for autographs. One of my favorite memories seeing him on the field near by.

Bears can and do sometimes. There was one viral video several years ago, where the girl is singing. It was supposedly in Honshu Island, Japan. I immediately knew it was a fake, because it was a brown bear and Honshu only has Asiatic black bears, which have a big white blaze on their chests. The only brown bears in Japan are on the northernmost island, Hokkaido. However, recently I read a true story that was really chilling. There were two skiers, skiing in Glacier NP in the spring, after bears had already come out of hibernation. There was only one way down from where they were, a chute. There was a mother grizzly and her cub in the immediate area and the skier had to ski by the cub to escape, which infuriated the mother and she chased him all the way to the bottom of the chute, where the terrain flattened out. What saved him was his partner made a sudden noise in some rocks and the bear turned and raced back up the mountain, presumably to protect her cub. They hurriedly packed up and left the area. Rangers told them that was a good move, because there was a strong chance the sow would have sought them out and attacked them in their tent. It was not explained how the first skier had managed to get by the bears...

Not as clear as I'd like...has been around for a number of years.
Good story, @Padreruf !

As he walked out of the room, Birmingham News photographer Charles Nesbitt, a guest on the hunting trip, instinctively but inconspicuously shot a single frame of the two coaches, engaged in a private conversation.

"Once everybody finished up the meal, it was suggested, 'Let's all go outside and let Coach Bryant and Coach Dye have some time absolutely alone,'" Nesbitt, who is now retired, recalls in an interview for AL.com Vintage.

"So I picked up my camera, and I was one of the last ones to walk out of the room, and I turned around and made one frame," he continues. "And somebody asked me one time, one of the other photographers, 'Why did you only make one image of that?'
