Prognostications for 2007

My Take on Alabama 2007

Okay, here's the skinny, at least from my perspective. I expect Alabama to get off to a rugged start, possibly dropping the Ark and GA game, sweep the middle, and shock either LSU or Auburn, and probably annihlate their bowl opponent, finishing 2/3 in the SEC West (due to their upset of one of the aforementioned programs).

Saban's teams have a knack for doing something Bama has not done since Stallings... get better and better as the season progresses and become downright monsters at the end of the season. Also, with the "every play" process Saban espouses, Auburn and LSU folks may as well forget BAMA rolling over the the 4th quarter. Remember that LSU team who slung out that hail mary play and scored the winning TD as the clock hit 0:00... I believe South Carolina had already torn down the goal post on the far side of the field before they realized that they had lost.

BAMA moved the ball on EVERYONE they played last Season AT WILL----- between the 20's and choked with the Jumbo Package and "Darby up the middle...2 yard loss" in the Red Zone. Those p'roblems should be gone this season. Also, when these starters the past few years would get a 2 score lead, the "Prevent" defense and "clock management" offense would come into play... making us blow leads and lose games.

While Saban is not a fast to go for the jugular as Spurrier, expect some of our opponents to get mad when they see the clock a 1:14 in the 4th, on a three TD lead, and Saban fans out four recievers and drops John-Parker into the shotgun, when a knee would end the game.

Now with this nationly recognized potentially lethal offense, why am I not saying "BCS Baby..all the way!" ???

DEFENSE. We are thin, and inexperienced. I expect many games to boil down to offensive shootouts, like the 1999 Florida game. Hence.... DRUMROLL PLEASE....

ALABAMA 8-4/9-3 on the regular season.. coming close enough to smell the smog in Atlanta but just not quite making it to the party.

Re: The 12-0 scenario.... hilarious

I believe we have the coaches who can make the decisions to put our players in a position to win every game. Whether the players will be able to make that happen this year or not is yet to be seen. But after reading the article, I don't believe that 12-0 is totally impossible this year. And if we hit the 12-0 mark, we might as well win the SEC Championship game and the BCS title game...say, against Notre Dame. How does that sound?

Re: My Take on Alabama 2007

Makes sense. I can easily see the year playing out that way. We'll have to see.

I believe it was Kentucky who fell prey to the hail mary.

I totally agree dude. 8-4/9-3 sounds more realistic to me and like you said, there will be some rough times. But if this team improves from week to week, from the beginning of the season to the end, it can only mean good things for our program in the long run, especially if we're able to play some freshmen and do well with them.

Re: The 12-0 scenario.... hilarious

GREAT! I'll take it, either though I'd personally rather it be that left coast team for the NC!:biggrin2: :BigA:

Re: The 12-0 scenario.... hilarious

Anything is possible, but that Vandy -> Arkansas -> Georgia -> FSU month is going to be the true test of our mental and physical strength and endurance. Like the article states, Tennessee will only have one week to prepare for us instead of their usual two weeks in recent years) and we have two weeks to prepare for LSU. I expect a surprise or two....RTR!

Don't disagree with your thoughts, Wisten, but can I stay in the "Delusional and Unrealistic" fanbase at least for 120 more days?!:biggrin2: :BigA:

Re: My Take on Alabama 2007

still to many question marks left to give any type of prediction, this year i dont think its gonna be so much how good we are playing because as you saw last year we played pretty well at times but its gonna come down to how well the other teams in the league are playing. State is still pretty young, ole miss still has a ? at qb, we all know whats going on at arkansas, LSU should still be as powerful as last year but Flynn, though doing well two years ago, still hasnt been tested will a full SEC season, or even an SEC defense at that, Auburn lost a group of veteran o-line men and brandon cox still hasnt become a good qb. Vandy always plays Bama tough, and Georgia got better as the year went on. At this point i'm gonna just wait and see what the summer has to bring us.

HUH? The same Coach Saban who sat on a 9 point 1st Q lead at Auburn in 2004? If the team is up by two scores, you will be running up the middle to run clock.

Also the hailmary was Kentucky not SC, but only because LSU sat on another lead. That doesn't make up for the hailmary LSU gave up against Ark in 2002 that cost them a trip to Atlanta or the one to Iowa in 2004 that cost the Cap one bowl.

Good luck with all that running up the score, watch out for UAB and Ole Miss, and pass the coolaid around one more time!!

Re: My Take on Alabama 2007

As the LSU fan pointed out, Saban is another ball control type of coach, which is perfectly fine if you have the lead and can still move the ball. If we can run like we traditionally have been able to, then I'd expect to see a lot of rotating backs if we get a decent early lead and just try to wear down the opponents. However, since CMA is running the offense and it seems to have some spread elements to it from what I have read about the spring game, he might be more like CSS. Either way, I love having CNS and think our team will be much better, but like most who have already posted, I'd expect only 8 or 9 regular season wins. I could see us losing to Ark simply b/c they run the ball and we are very up front on D.

Couldn't agree more, that's his history.

Never happen in a million years. More than likely, he'll sit on a lead to the point of losing it. Not a shot, just this is also his history.

Re: My Take on Alabama 2007

One really accurate point in this thread:

Coach Saban's teams did finish strong at LSU. Strength and conditioning will not be a problem for Bama this year. They will be solid.

I believe he's the perfect guy to change the "loser mentality" that has plagued the Bama football team during the Shula regime.

Cheers,

Cleotus

I really don't know how that is going to play out. For our LSU fans on here, did Saban let Jimbo call his own plays? I think we could be chunking it alot more than most Bama fans are used to if CMA runs the same O that he did at Rice. It's not Hawaii style but close.

Re: My Take on Alabama 2007

I expect ball control offense this season if for no other reason than quick scores will just put our defense back on the field.

In 1992 and in 2005, leaving the defense on the field just meant more punishment for the opposing offense. If we don't win TOP in this season, 2007 won't be pretty.

Well our offensive strength is our passing game, right now. That was one of the only things that were awesome last year was for the most part, we could pass the ball at will, even with our run game in the dumps. I could see us go with a more "Air Bama" attack in order to spread the defense, and then run the ball. There is just no way our run game can get any worse compared to last year.

Actually Vandy will be the Vandy of old so forget them. We will win that game and do so in a good way! Arkansas won't be a pushover, but given their current situation and the fact that they'll be here and starting Casey Dick we should win that game by 10 or so. Georgia is the great unknown! They weren't very good last year and somehow snuck out a few decent wins. With that said, they have no QB and frankly average as best skill players and their D, well their D gave up a million second half points last year. Again give us the advantage for it being in BD. FSU, well that's the game that is going to be a great unknown until the season starts. FSU wasn't very good last year but I can't remember when they've been down two straight years, so that could be a tough game. The one good thing is that I truly believe the stadium will be 60% Bama, so that should be interesting. Time will tell!
