Prothro to begin Rehab

"Alabama junior wide receiver/kick returner Tyrone Prothro is having surgery to remove the rods from the leg he broke so horrifically in October against Florida. Once that is done, he can begin to rehab in earnest. No one knows how long it will take. If I had to guess, I'd say his senior season will be in 2007 -- if ever.

Considering the type of injury he had, I hope he does not attempt a come back in football until the 2007 season. I'm all for his rehab, but I just don't want to see him push his luck. He is a young man with a lot of life ahead of him and the most important thing is his health.

He's literally going to have to take baby steps. I hate to say it, but he will be lucky to walk normally after a break as bad as that. If there's a miracle and he decides to come back, I will be happy, but I think the stress I would get when he was on the field would give me heart trouble.

Yep I wouldnt expect to see him play again but I'm sure it could happen. But like what was said, his ability in everyday life is way more important than him playing. Let's pray he'll be fine.

I think the thing that will help ensure his comeback is he's an incredible athlete and is surrounded by very encouraging people. Any normal person would be happy to walk normal, Tyrone will play again. Maybe he'll get a medical redshirt and a regular redshirt. Two years to recover fully.

Desire and youth are Protho's allies. Thiesman experienced a similar break 15 years later in life and he was done. Of course, surgical and rehab procedures have also advanced tremendously since Thiesman was injured on MNF.

Let me begin by saying that I AM NOT A DOCTOR (no I didn't stay in a holiday inn express once either).

However, I have a very close friend who is a doctor and 2 close friends who are both sports physical therapist and all say that the way he broke his leg is actually MUCH better than what happened to A.C. He has an outside shot at being ready by this summer and all should go well for an '07 return if he is unable to go by August. The issues surrounding A.C. were much more of a problem because his bone splintered! Pro's broke in two places but did so very cleanly.

Also, it is not a myth that your leg heals stronger than it was normally and therefore, when he is back, his leg should be fine.

By the way, one final note...his leg isn't as much the issue once the rods are out...the issues are two-fold. First his confidence in it and second his leg STRENGTH! Once those items return in full, he should be fine.

Yes, it was a horrific injury, but he can come back with a little luck. Obviously we all hope to see him again, but we hope he's fine as a person more so than as a football player.

I'm not saying that his return is guaranteed as he still has a long road ahead, but he can come back if his healing is without incident.

I makes me very sad when a great player, or any player, goes down with injury.
TP's was a horrible injury. I will rooting for him to return. Yes, there have been great medical advances in recent years but his strongest ally will be his heart and determination. God bless him I hope he does make it back.

This is why I hope he redshirts in 2006. There's no sense in pushing his luck.

If he is able to come back in 2006, great. If he redshirts in 2006, he can shoot for the 2007.

Best wishes to Tyrone. I hope, first of all, that he is able to walk and live in comfort and has no lingering issues from the break.

If he is able to return to football, that would be great, but, only if the doctors & Tyrone feel comfortable in him doing so. I really hope that he redshirts in 2006 to get back to close to 100%, and comes back to play in 2007. If that comes to pass, the 2007 team could really be something special.

Ok I know this is my first post, so my credibility is not that great. I will, however, throw in my two cents. My younger brother sustained a very similar injury (he broke his femur completely in half), and because of his youth he was able to make a complete recovery. This was at the highschool level, and he did not have to compete with the terrific athletes that TP will have to go toe-to-toe with, but my brother is a running back that has taken his fair share of licks since the injury. My older brother is a PA (physicians assistant), and believes that if no ligament damage was sustained, TP should be able to make a full recovery. I'm a used car salesman, so I'll understand if you think this post is a load of crap. This is just the information that the people around me are giving. Another thing that we should remember is Tyrone's work ethic. I mean I haven't been in the weight room with him, but I do know that he bench pressed 360lbs coming out of high school. A 175lb kid doesn't get that kind of strengh without working his rearend off. I think he'll put out a super human effort during rehab and be back 100% by 2007. RTR

I'm not a doctor either, but I was really ticked when I read Ivan's comment and similar comments about Pro's injury. I had the exact same injury when I was 16... the EXACT same thing, with the two bones broken, breaking the skin and exposing the bone, infection and everything. I also had a bone fragment completely break off, which healed back strong. It happened in October, I had the rods removed in early January, was walking (albeit a little wobbly) in April and was fully recovered by summer.

I kept doing rehab for a good while to build the leg back up, and while I suspect Pro could miss '06, I also suspect that being a world-class athlete that he was in much better shape than me before the injury.

Now I realize that every injury is unique, but the talk of Pro's career being over is insulting and misguided--not to mention demoralizing to our team and fans--and frankly isn't even very realistic. It's pessimistic at best. That kind of speculation isn't journalism, and Ivan's better than that.
