Hopefully someone besides me heard this on JOX this morning. The guys were talking about a proposal made by Purdue coach Joe Tiller to the NCAA that would involve the creation of a mandatory one-month period during the year when absolutely NO recruiting can take place. Tiller evidently said that he deserves a vacation and time with his family, and that he should not be punished for that by having rival coaches out-recruit him during his off-time.

To me, this seems like another attempt to de-Sabanize recruiting in this country. Just like Tubbs went hunting during peak recruiting season last year and criticized Saban for working 24-7, Tiller wants to take a break and not suffer for it. What is it with these coaches who are paid millions of dollars yet are so quick to demonize those who are simply willing to work harder than the rest?

Re: Tiller wants Recruiting Vacation

always the same story....the have-not's would rather bring everyone down to their level than they would to bump up their own efforts a few notches. See vanderbilt............

Re: Tiller wants Recruiting Vacation

Tiller is about to retire, so his vacation is coming soon anyway.

Re: Tiller wants Recruiting Vacation

Our country's greatness is founded on the competition created when someone wants to out work, out serve, or out produce their competition to provide a better product or service for the consumers (fans). Tiller's suggestion is only slightly above anyone who wishes to do away with the goal posts, or the endzones, and simply run around on the field until it is determine everybody had a "swell" time and then go home. Winners always want to compete and I am so glad my son never played for anyone like Tiller. If he ever came recruiting at my house, I wouldn't even let him in the door.
It is his kind of attitude -combined with the fact most athletic departments lose money under Title IX -that will soon reduce football scholarships to 60 or 65.

Re: Tiller wants Recruiting Vacation

Seriously, that's the most I've heard Joe Tiller mentioned since our coaching search after the firing of Dubose.

His name is not out there like it was eight years ago.

Re: Tiller wants Recruiting Vacation

I have to agree here, I also would like to propose to the federal government that all my competitors close down shop I'd like a dang vacation to!

Seems I heard that it was a Big 10 wide proposal now. However, its a two week break or something along those lines. I just don't get it. I guess they're tired of being outworked by Ron Zook and his SEC style of recruiting.

Re: Tiller wants Recruiting Vacation

Ron Zook is about a three or four hour drive a way? Ron may just pay Tiller a visit.

Re: Tiller wants Recruiting Vacation

Well this is Tiller's last year coaching with his impending retirement coming at the end of the 2008-09 season. Of course he can say things that other coaches could not and would not say about recruiting. I bet his successor Danny Hope doesn't feel the same way. ;)

Tiller, Hope energized for Boilermakers' 2008 campaign
It's not until after practice that Tiller realizes why he's walking away.

"I feel my energy level slipping a little bit," Tiller said Monday after Purdue's workout at the Mollenkopf Athletic Center. "I still feel like I have energy, and I look forward to these practices and coming out here, but I don't mind going home anymore. I used to want to stay up all night, watching tape. So if that's slipping, then that's me.

"That's part of it when you say, 'It's time.'"

I would have figured that Hope was a coordinator, rather than the offensive line coach. Seems strange for a position coach to be taking over in 2009 for Purdue.

Re: Tiller wants Recruiting Vacation

If Tillers retiring in a year or so, then what the heck is he bellyaching about? I guess Zook must be shaking things up in the Big 10 and the rest don't like it. Lazy Ears should invite Tiller to go duckhunting this year, he's likes vacations too.:p_green:

Re: Tiller wants Recruiting Vacation

When you go up against Ohio St., Notre Dame, and Michigan in your recruiting area you are not going to fair very well. I need a vacation, I can't compete, I can't recruit.

OSU - Keeps most of the instate talent
Michigan - Keeps most of the instate talent
Notre Dame - Gets a lot of Talent from all over

My name is Joe and I want a break. I can not compete with OSU, Michigan, Notre Dame, and Illinois. I am too old and not willing to put in the time.

All kidding aside having a month away from recruiting will not change Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Notre Dame, USC, Texas, and Michigan. These schools and others will always get their recruits.

Can anyone explain how a month off benefits anyone.
