Purdue Head Coach Joe Tiller wants Recruiting Vacation

Re: Tiller wants Recruiting Vacation

coaches get paid too much to vacation during the recruiting period.

It's called a JOB!!! IT'S WHAT YOU GET PAID TO DO. I really wish I could just take a month off from work with pay.

Wow... pretty arrogant.

I'm tired of coaches villainizing the recruiting process as a necessary evil that can/should be "minimized" as if it's only about coaches trying to nab up the fastest or strongest kids. It's a two-sided process and is also about potential student athletes trying to make the best college choice for their future and find the best fit amongst a myriad of schools/coaches/programs/systems/locations/etc. With the demands of classes, tests, athletic practices, and all the other stuff that takes place in a H.S. kids life there's only so much time to get all the information needed to make the right decision. There's a reason the smart kids take all their visits and all their time before making a decision. There's a reason that kids decide to transfer from schools in the middle of their college careers and lose a year of eligibility. There's also a reason that some programs seem to have more legal issues than others. It all has to do with how much you put into the recruiting process. Finding out that a kid or a school isn't a good fit (and instead offering a scholarship to a kid who goes on to a brilliant career) isn't something that should be trivialized. There are futures at stake. Recruiting should be looked at as an opportunity and not a necessary evil.

What Joe Tiller fails to see is that as a college coach he also plays a role as an educator. If he wants to take a break and make himself unavailable for a month then that's fine and understandable provided he can still carry out his duties but forcing his colleagues to do the same is just, for lack of a better term, bringing down the level of service and only cheats the people who's care he's been charged with.
