The saving grace for Gus is that he doesn’t need an NFL quality QB to be reasonably successful.

He’s good enough to win enough to keep a job and make a lot of money so what does he care?
For some it’s about more than money. I assume most coaches want to excel to the top and win championships and put first rounders in the league.

It has to make you wonder what Cam could have been under say Sarkisian. Early on he was pretty effective with apparently little help from his college coaches.
That's basically because he always played "backyard ball"...

He did a LOT of improv when he played down at the pasture. He made Gus look like a genius.

ummm . . . Richard Todd?
Richard Todd certainly didn't "make it big" in the NFL. He managed to stay in the league for 10 years, but that was his primary achievement. He was otherwise not very successful by any other measure.

That Gus's offense was a bad fit for the NFL at the QB position is not shocking at all.

That's not what sank him though. When you have a stud athlete with a decent arm you can stick back there (Nick Marshall, Bo etc.) then the offense will run just fine.

What killed Gus is that his offense was a terrible primer for offensive linemen as well, and it wasn't hard to negatively recruit on that. Hence the fact that we just signed our first HS tackle since 2017. He'd miss then go the JUCO or GT route without fail.
Bo? As in, Bo Nix?

Cam was the best athlete on the field by a long shot...anyone with an ounce of sense about playing QB knew that he did it by talent and not by coaching. Other than Can I cannot recall one QB that GM has put into the NFL. JS is very talented but not in the Cam category...the jury is still out.

Yeah I'm not sure I'd describe Bo Nix a Stud at QB.... nor has AU's offense ran just fine with him.

Actually AU's offense fell off a cliff with Nix at QB.

He's a career 58% passer through 2 full seasons and their PPG has dropped from 28th (33.2ppg) in 2019 to 88th (25.1) in 2020.

At least Stidham could crack the 60% Comp rate barrier. Nix stinks.

Wasn’t sure if this deserved it’s own thread... if not mods feel free to delete.

I thought this was a very interesting article from al.com. There’s quotes from Jarrett Stidham’s QB coach regarding how playing in both Art Briles and Gus Malzahn’s offenses had Stidham completely unprepared for playing in the NFL. We’ve all talked at length through the years about how these offenses are gimmicky, “Mickey Mouse” like, and only work with perfect circumstances at the college level, but this really sheds light on Gus and his inability to recruit top talent at the QB position and more so on the inability to develop the guy’s they did get.

Cammy Cam got grudenized when Gruden asked him to call an Auburn play and Cammy was totally stumped. "uh ummm uhhh ummmm ... we just keep it simple."

10 years in the league is nothing to sneeze at.
Jeff Rutledge had a 13-year NFL career with 3 Super Bowl teams and 2 NFL rings.

He was 2-7-1 as a starter. Context matters and I wouldn’t regard Todd as a big-name QB though he was more of a drop back passer than most wishbone guys.

Between Stabler and Tua the only quarterback at Alabama with serious pro potential was probably Brodie. But injuries did him in.

The 1981 team had SIX quarterbacks. Walter Lewis was pretty well considered the starter, but Coach Bryant brought them in and out fresh.

Give me ambiguity or give me something else.

It's line play. Practically every throw Bo makes is either on the run or hurried because the blocking was hot garbage.

Watching Auburn play under Gus was like watching kids on a playground draw plays up in the sand. You go here, and then here, and I'm going to give you ball over here and then you throw the ball over there to him. It worked on occasion but does nothing to help the kids prepare for the next level.
