That's the best news I've seen yet. He'll probably still redshirt his freshman year, but that will still give him the opportunity to start for 4 years.Cornwell is slated to graduate in December and will enroll at Alabama in January after participating in the Under Armour All-America game.
Something I saw on rivals today so looks like he'll be an EE, good news
I know the competition will be intense when AJ graduates. The three QB's that are freshman this year are all stong arm QB's (I disagree with an earlier poster that thought Bateman can't get the job done) and all have good potential but David looks the part, walks the part and looks like a NFL QB physically now. I think his upside may be the greatest but time will tell. That's the best news I've seen yet. From the highlights I've seen, Bateman has all the talent in the world, but he is a gun slinger. I don't think he could start right away simply because he'll try to take to many chances. (He reminds me a little bit of Brett Favre) He has the potential to be a great quarterback in the long run, but it probably won't be for a couple of years.I know the competition will be intense when AJ graduates. Then again he may win the starting position next year and be the next Andrew luck! Would that be a Debbie Upper? Not to be a Debbie Downer, but we already have other blue chip QBs on campus and will likely sign another one in 2015. Cornwell could be the next A.J. McCarron or the next Philip Ely.
I'm glad we have him and someone else doesn't, but he may never see the field at Alabama.
That would be great. I'm just saying once a QB grabs the starting spot, he tends to hold onto it and others decide seek playing time elsewhere. A lot of QBs never pan out through no fault of their own other than being born too close to another stud QB.Then again he may win the starting position next year and be the next Andrew luck! Ely was a 3* recruit. Most Bama fans didn't know he was a serious QB option for the 2011 class until the day he committed. Not to be a Debbie Downer, but we already have other blue chip QBs on campus and will likely sign another one in 2015. He very well may redshirt but, since he will turn 20 before the middle of his freshman year, I could easily see him having the physical size and mental ability to play right out of HS. Would be weird having a 21 yr old freshman. Also, if he is good as advertised will he be able to go pro after his true soph or redshirt freshman year. Since his initial HS class graduated this month, does his clock start 2 years from now or 2 years from when he graduates? Not trying to get ahead but, if he can enter the draft 2016, that may play a factor. That's the best news I've seen yet. Thanks for the information. I went back and read the article while I can see both sides of the argument, I'm glad he got another year to play. I wish I had skipped the comments section, however. It was awarded last week. It was in the "update" thread about him that has been shut down since his commitment.
He's good to go for this fall and it has been said earlier that he should enroll at Bama next January as an EE and be eligible for spring practice.
His highlight tape is very impressive. He just flicks it and the ball goes 50 yards downfield on the run. He can certainly make all the throws so the question will just be his decision making and understanding of the offense when he comes in.
Glad we got an elite QB this early so he can start to work on other guys in the recruiting class.
I wouldn't rule out Del Rio. The kid has football smarts and won't make dumb mistakes. That's Coach Saban's first requirement in a QB.From the highlights I've seen, Bateman has all the talent in the world, but he is a gun slinger. Del Rio has the blood lines, but I doubt he will ever be more than a clip board holder. (He will learn from the best coach in the business though, which will only help him if he follows his father's footsteps.)
Probably the best opportunity to replace McCarron will be Alec Morris, simply because he will have more time under his belt. (3 years as a redshirt sophomore) He doesn't strike me as the most talented f the group, but he will probably be the one that will best fit Saban's system from the get go.
Needless to say, the qb battles will be interesting for a few years to come.
