Question concerning Sunseri, ST's, and injuries

Its kinda 2-part. First, is there a correlation between a higher % of injuries on ST plays vs non ST plays?

Second, besides Sunseri, I have noticed Collins (ST demon), D white, C Jones, D Hart and a few other very high profile players being key cogs on our ST's this year. *If* Sunseri is out for a length of time, do we rethink who is on our ST's, esp kick/punt coverage? Assuming worst case, Sunseri being out, it seems Collins becomes much more indespensible.

Just wondering what the resident experts opinions are ...

The way Collins is playing right now?! I don't see anything changing.

It seems like we have an injury every year that we deem devastating but we cope. I remember the sky seemed to fall when Hightower was injured and I thought our championship aspirations were done after Fowler dropped last year, we were running a lot of H-back and he was playing like a superstar. He was The Man until he went out. We all tried to figure out who would take his place, it ended up we just worked to everyones strength's rather than try to replace him, although someone did step in when we ran the H-back.

Remember the Brodie Croyle days? That's as close as I ever want to get to overly depending on one player, his injuries ended our seasons. Not so these days.

We're very fortunate that when Vinnie went down to injury we were able to replace him by bringing in a first team All-American safety.
Nobody has depth like we do and that's one of the biggest reasons we're as good as we are.
I hate it for Vinnie though. He is a play maker and just a flat out good football player. One of my favorites.
I don't know how long he'll be out but you better believe he'll come back with a vengeance!

Yep, that's what makes us Bama. We always say next man up, but unlike others we really mean it. And it's proved time and time again since CNS has been here.

Oh, those Shula/Dubose/Franchione/Price years. Glad they are done...

While Sunseri is an incredible special teams performer, there really is no reason to be risking him to injury on special teams in most games. Also plenty of other players to participate on special teams. Unfortunately, injuries are part game.

I don' know the answer, but it seems that all of UGA's injuries occurred on non ST plays.
Yes sir & you can't not play someone because they may get hurt.

Special teams is important to CNS now, that wasnt always the case & we get beat LSU or almost get beat 10rc on side kick. I see a much improved ST because we have really good players out their. Collins said in an interview that was his favorite position to play.

Whatever coaching was done in the off & pre season added excitement to ST. I don't think you could tell Vinnie you can't do it anymore & I really hope he recovers quickly, he is one Special player.

Remember when our special teams were a liability?

Obviously, we now have 4 and 5 star guys who make up the 2 and 3 deep depth chart who are now playing on these STs, but one of the reasons we are so much better is because CNS is willing to play starters on STs.

Injuries happen.

I think we all hate to see a Bama player go down from a strength and competitive standpoint, but Vinnie just personifies everything we Bama fans believe a Bama player should be- hard worker, leader, never taking anything for granted, always looking to be better, 100% on every play, active role in making the next generation better, true heart, and pure grit.

I genuinely hope that the Arkansas game was not Vinnie's last game, not because we need him (of course we do), but because he has given everything he can to be in the position to lead the defense onto the field of the NC game his senior year.

If I am not mistaken VS is a Junior. So even if he cannot return this year, He hopefully could for next year. He is hands down my favorite player. Prayers for a quick and complete recovery.

Our only indespensible player is McCarron...we lose him this season, everything changes...

We've always played our best players on ST under Saban. That's why the unit is so good.

If you are concerned about Vinnie getting injured on the 10 special team plays he participates in, you must be really nervous about the 40+ snaps he plays on defense each game.

Injuries are a part of the game. I'd rather have our best players on the field in all three phases than to put in guys that may not be as solid in a particular phase because of injury worry. If having Vinnie on special teams gives us the best chance of winning, then play Vinnie on special teams.

Kickoffs are the most dangerous part of the game due to the high speed collisions. Alabama, of all teams, has enough talented backups to handle it. If not, they shouldn't be on the squad.

I agree that kickoffs are the most dangerous plays of the game, and that is why may teams take their best players out of the game and thus weaken the unit. Alabama has taken its superior talent and made special teams a weapon and not a liability. That one extra turnover or downed punt at the 1 many be the difference in a tight game.
