True story:
I can distinctly remember one attempt over the course of a week under a tree in my grandparents yard where they had built a huge sand "box" for us (we and the local farmer's kid would stay w/ my grandparents while our parents worked and he would bring a ton, literally, of sand about every year and dump under the tree. Glory!) Anyway, we dug and dug and dug and thought we almost saw the Great Wall but later realized it was only a large root to the tree.

Never have dug that far but our hole was deep enough for us as pre-school kids to get in, stand up and not be seen.
