My personal thoughts: Would be a great opportunity for him to coach a prestigious program and he'd bring a level of universal respect to their sidelines that hasn't been there since John Robinson.

From A&M'a standpoint, losing him & Manziel I'm one pop would be borderline disastrous.

That being said, he doesn't strike me as a guy that would leave, but then again, he has to strike while the iron is hot.

My personal thoughts are that Sumlin has not been vetted at the top levels yet and will not be until Manziel and Evans are gone and his recruits become team leaders.

He'd be a good hire for them. He runs the same type of offense that is en vogue in the Pac-12. But aren't they still under NCAA sanctions? Or at least feeling the brunt of their impact now? Would Sumlin really want to head the USC for that?

My $0.02: when he leaves, it will be for the NFL, not another college program.

On Sumlin and aTm, this would be a move down. The SC of Spurrier is a blip on the screen of a losing program with much, much less tradition than aTm, and with much less booster support, which is huge at aTm.

I'm a little confused by your post. You realize the article is about Southern California and not South Carolina, right?

I changed that, all the USCw's and USCe get me confused, I have always used USC and SC. I was also wondering how I missed that Spurrier was leaving!
 
I think the jury's still out on Sumlin. He hasn't gotten into compliance issues as a head coach or had serious meltdowns on the sideline or at a press conference (Pelini, Gundy to name a few). From listening to him just a little bit, he seems to stress the important things (discipline, focus, etc) and he doesn't run at the mouth. I don't like the style of offense, but I'd strongly consider him if I was an AD. The only question is if his success was based off of following right behind Briles and then the JFF/Evans combo.

I don't really want media darling USC to succeed, but Del Rio and Sumlin would be 2 coaches in my top (realistic) 5.
 
I really don’t get the article implying he would be getting offers from the NFL soon. I get that he is a good offensive mind but Chip Kelly isn’t necessarily lighting it up in the NFL and all Sumlin has really proved up until now is he can coach one side of the ball. If anything I think how awful his defense is takes away from his head coaching resume. aTm is not an upper echelon school in my mind, I do not care how much money they raise. Sumlin should call Dan Mullen and ask him how not striking while the iron is hot is working out. In my opinion there are several levels of college football programs with teams like Bama, ND and as much as it pains me USC at the very top. aTm is not there, they may have a couple of good years but they have a long way to go to be considered lateral to USC.
 
If he has aspirations to coach at a school as high profile as USC, he should jump on an offer if it comes. He's proven that he can lead a highly productive program that keeps it's nose clean.

I agree with the sentiment that losing Manziel and Sumlin at one time could set aTm back a few years.
 
A&M will back up a Brinks truck and keep Sumlin. USCw will have a better chance at Franklin - and I think he could be a better fit for LA.
 
aTm would be nothing next year losing sumlin, manziel, and Evans. Makes it worse if a Sumlin does bolt

Good point, I never think favorably of coaches that hop before 4 years at a school. I would view the move as being a sell out, ignoring a challenging commitment for a bigger paycheck at a job he is less likely to keep long term. Anyone who disagrees is justifying coach Fran imo.
 
I just don't think USC is a great place, and that's even if the probation weren't an issue.

I'm not bashing their history... I just think there are better jobs out there. Heck.. I think A&M is probably better but that's just me.

And, considering the cost of living and taxes difference, each dollar from A&M is worth much more than one from USC.

That's true as well, although some may be willing to sacrifice some money just for the prestige of living in Los Angeles. If College Station isn't your cup of tea, you might want to look elsewhere.
 
I have three words for you all that should dispel a lot of the rumors you'll hear in the next six months:

Billy Clyde Gillespie.

Sumlin could turn in nine straight 6-6 seasons with what he's done so far, and not fear for his job. Don't forget the 11-2 2012 squad was essentially the same team that Mike Sherman went 7-6 with in 2011, with current Dolphins starting QB Ryan Tannehill.

Sumlin has roots in Texas now, has the respect of many of the key H.S. coaches here, and can recruit with anyone for Texas players. All of that gets reset in California, where Sumlin has never set foot in his entire coaching career. He's not going to pull a Billy Clyde...

P.S. I love Evans, but we'll be fine without him. We have an absolute stable of WRs coming up, including 'Mike Evans 2.0' in Ricky Seals-Jones. He's taller, faster, and has massive hands. This was his third (and final) catch of the season in the opener against Rice. Unfortunately he decided to sandbag the last 20 yards and got his knee torn up at the end. Medical Redshirt and should be ready for '15.
