In case it's of any interest.....the 1997 miniseries "Rough Riders" is on tonight on Get TV channel.

Pretty good cast and directed & co-written by John Milius (Conan, Big Wednesday, The Wind and the Lion, Red Dawn).

Watching Part 1 right now and I think Part 2 will follow. Might be future showings as well.

Hollywood's take on this significant time in our nation's history....

Saw this recently. It was very well done and has a great cast. Really liked Tom Berringer and Sam Elliot. Must see of a little publicized period in US history.

Yeah Gray...Gary Busey and William Katt were in it too - who played 2 of the 3 main characters in Milius's "Big Wednesday". I'm guessing Jan Michael Vincent (who played the third main character in "Big Wednesday") would have also been in it except for unfortunate circumstances of Vincent's mental and/or physical state.

Sam Elliot of course is ALWAYS good in everything he does.

I always enjoy movies which depict part of our country's history.

Teddy Roosevelt especially!

Good film. Does not do justice to the 9th and 10th US Cavalry, perhaps, but a decent film.

If you dislike today's media climate, the media of that era was something else.
Wm. H. Hearst sent Frederic Remington to Cuba to cover the unpleasantness there in case the US got involved. Remington cabled Hearst: "Everything is quiet. There is no trouble here. There will be no war. I wish to come home.” Hearst responded: “Please remain. You furnish the pictures, and I'll furnish the war."

I was not aware that the Cuban/ Spanish forces had German "advisors". You learn something every day.

Thought that was interesting as well, Gray.

Also, Brian Keith as President McKinley - a nod from Milius from his role as President Roosevelt in "The Wind and the Lion". It was his last film...he passed away in 1997, the year "Rough Riders' was released.

EDIT: Just read this:
Director John Milius dedicated the film to "Brian Keith, Actor, Marine, Raconteur."
