Kudos to Ryan Saxby our back up place kicker who showed up and had a solid performance in the kicking game. It is so good to see the returners take a knee 5 yards deep in the endzone. As a matter of fact all of our special teams looked satisfactory or at least capable of not loosing us ball games. To all the special teams players and staff way to put in the extra effort this off-season all your hardwork is starting to show.

wasn't there a false start penalty that cost BAMA 3 points???

Yeah. That was frustrating. He made a great kick.

I don't really blame him for missing the 2nd attempt. I'm sure he was disappointed after that penalty. A kicker's mindset has to go from one end to the other in a situation like that.

Still did a good job.

It wasn't a false start.... it was an illegal formation. Someone forgot to run out for the play so we ended up with not enough men on the line of scrimmage. That is a coaching issue.

Yes, but it resulted in lessons learned all the way around and did not cost us anything - unless someone thinks that a win by 3 more points would have been more beneficial in some way.

The kid did great!

I agree. I'd rather learn that lesson in a game where we don't need the extra 3 points, so that we don't make it in game where we do need the points.

Saxby did an excellent job. Excellent.

It was actually a little frustrating from my view point. LeRon went to lineup in his position for the field goal when he noticed that someone was missing. He started gesturing to the sideline that someone was missing. I then looked down at the sideline and saw someone start to run on the field and then stop. I then thought I saw Shula about to call a timeout but then he stopped. Then the play proceeded and we got a penalty.

Obviously the player not being out on the field was a problem but I'm wondering why we didn't call a timeout.

The reason for not calling a time out may have been that they didn't feel distance was an issue. Which in this case it wasn't as he had plenty of leg on both kicks he unfortunately pushed the second one left.

The snap on the second attempt was low. So the miss wasn't all Saxby's fault..

I've heard Coach Shula say twice that he claims responsibility for that. It takes a great man to admit to the Bama faithful that you lost UA 3 points.

That was the penalty for not having enough players on the field, we had 10 players out there. How can they penalize you for playing a man short? If you line up with 12 players then I understand, you are gaining a substantial advantage. But this rule makes no sense.

Because the player that was missing was supposed to be on the line of scrimmage. We only had 6, and you must have 7. Six men on the line = illegal formation.

South Alabama, where else?
I am a frequent lurker on this site and find it very informative. I decided to post because I met RS last year at the beginning of the season and I know members of his family. This is a quality guy both on and off the field. He was a transfer from South Carolina and has been waiting patiently to show what he can do. He comes from a family of kickers as his big sister played collegiate soccer and was the recipient of the highschool female soccer coach of the year in Mobile County. I believe his little brother is a highschool kicker in Georgia. He is honored to wear the crimson jersey and understands what fans expect of the Tide program. I asked him what his Coach Shula was really like and he said that he is one of the most knowledgable persons about football he has ever met. So I was excited to see him not only play, but play well last Sat. RTR!

I actually know Ryan well and and I can attest to everything TCB said. He has really worked hard since getting to UA and has been thrilled about the opportunity to play this year. Ryan is very active at the Baptist Campus Ministries here on campus and is all-in-all a great guy to be around. While as an Alabama fan I hope the best player plays at the kicker position, I do hope that Ryan is able to earn some playing time. He is a player who truly represents the team well both on and off the field.
