As always seems to be the case when Arky and Alabama play over the last several years, this game is the hinge and catapult to a good to great season for the winner. One hates to put too much weight on to one game, but the loser is playing catch up the rest of the year. I think it's extremely important that we BLAST the field with our crowd noise a la Florida 2005, even if we don't score as quickly, or even if Arky gets us down early (keep in mind that we had early leads, especially 3 years ago, when it was a HUGE lead that we blew and let into overtime, only to lose based on a STUPID "celebration" penalty that irks me to this very day)...

The team and the coaches will be prepared and ready. Will we?

RTR! Beat those hawgs!

I couldn't agree more with blasting the field with crowd noise. Bama needs to develop a true home field advantage at BDS. You see it and hear it at LSU and at MSU with those annoying cowbells.

Come on Bama fans - let's stop being so polite and make our opponents dread coming into BDS!

CNS will have the team prepared. I wouldn't worry about that. I'd worry about the actual execution of the gameplan. Our D has played well in 2 games against inferior opponents, but Ark has two of the best RBs in the nation to go along with a solid OL that is built to run the ball. Missed assignments/ tackles are going to be the key to this game IMHO.

I agree missed tackles will be key. If we can eliminate the mistakes that we have control over such as tackles then we have a chance to take control of this game early. If we take away their running game then we'll be able to cut their legs out from under them.

Even though I agree with you about the crowd noise and getting behind the team whether or not we go up early, I am less inclined to say this game will be a turning point for our team this year. I really don't believe that a loss to Arky would send us into the abyss as it has in years past. A lot of that came from the fact that we didn't improve from week to week, and if we couldn't beat Arkansas, then we really couldn't beat TN, AU, or LSU. We should be more interested in building a football team with a winning mentality this year. I just want to see improvement from week to week. As CNS says, it isn't about the result...it's about the process...

Well, this will be the first game that will show us what we're made of. In addition to the crowd needing to be in the game from down #1, our D-line and LB's need to have VERY big days. If their heads aren't in it, those two galloping hosses from Arkansas will have their way with us up and down the field.

No, Rivatide, we won't hit the "abyss", but the confidence and the shot in the arm a win would give this team would be immeasurable...

Really, unless we just fall apart defensively, I just can't even fathom a way we lose it. I don't want the team thinking this way, of course, but we can, can't we? ;)
As you say, don't want the team thinking that way, and agreed that we CAN think that way. The question is: SHOULD we? Of course, I walk up the steps to my seat every week expecting Alabama to win. But if I were so sacrilegious as to sully the purity that is Alabama football by actually BETTING on a game ... this one is basically a "pick 'em" IMHO.

The Hogs are so-so on defense, but although the running game has been a refreshing surprise, Bama's "high-octane" (per pre-season predictions) passing game has struggled, as discussed in other threads. The Hogs are one-dimensional on offense, but - OH! - what a dimension it is. More importantly, Bama's defense is patchwork - and perilously thin - in the two groups necessary to stop a strong running game: DL and LB. Bama has some outstanding newcomers at these positions, but as a group, the Front Seven (or Six or Eight) are inexperienced and learning a new system. More importantly, there isn't much depth to speak of behind the starters.

He who controls the clock wins this game. Bama must play superlative defense - and EARLY - against the run (not just avoid a meltdown). The offense must put together long, sustained drives, AND score TD's, keeping McFadden & Co. off the field, and forcing Arkansas to win with the pass. If Bama fails to control the clock, Arkansas won't abandon the run, and the Tide's defensive front will be playing hands-on-hips early in the fourth quarter.

This has the makings of a heart-wrenchingly close game: Bama's better offensive balance and (marginally) better defense and special teams vs. Arkansas' excellent running attack and the trickeration from their Wildcat Package.

See y'all at BDS on Sat. night! I'll be the intoxicated guy in the white shirt and crimson hat.

While not a pivotal game as far as wins and losses this game will have major implications for team goals. In the SEC the goals are a winning record, winning your division, winning the SEC & winning the BCS title. The loser of this game can probably erase the last three goals and just hope for a good bowl game. LSU is just going to be too tough. Of course they probably had more talent last year and the Piggies won the west. The only thing for certain is another long year for my Rebs. Thank God for Miss St.

I would say this game is more of a barometer than a turning point. It's the first game that we could lose as easily as we could win. Therefore it will provide the most accurate gauge for how good we are. Win this one and odds are we're good enough to compete with UGA and AU on an even field and probably should beat FSU. Lose this one and the FSU game probably gains a little more importance and we're probably a yr or two away from competing with UGA/AU. Either way this is the first year palpable improvement has been in sight since Fran left.

I agree with the barometer comment and RT! I have hope because we were so close last year at their place. I can't wait to see Rolando, Prince, Zeke and Darren knocking heads with Darren and Felix. That will be the battle that dictates the war. I see our D holding strong and our Offense putting up some points. Bama 31-17. BDS will be rocking!

I couldnt agree more with this post. I have thought about how this game seem to launch the tides season good or bad. If you guys and gals think about it just look at the years Bama has beaten the hogs and what kind of record the tide has went on to post. Just as what poor of a season we have endured when the tide has come up short.

I think one reason why this game is so important for both teams is it usually is early and the first real conference team each other face. This is one series that I cant quite figure out though. Alabama has been beat by a very average Arkansas team many times and the tide has beaten some Arkansas teams that they probably shouldnt have beat.

In closing I feel that this year will be much different in how I feel about the outcome. I know that we have a competent coach(no slap on bebes or coach fran) that will have our team prepared and be able to out coach Houston Nutt.

RTR!!!!

yes, this is a true test of our teams growth. arkansas, is not considered an elitist team in the sec, but, they give everyone fits. they have the best backs in college football, and no passing game. i will expect mcclain, mustain, and hall to help control between the tackles, and help from the secondary on the corners to keep big gainers to a minimum, if they guys do that we will win, because i dont think arkansas can stop our offense consistently. i also expect a better passing game this week.
