I headed to worned down Ladd Stadium to watch the South Team practice. Even though, I'm not a NFL scout, there are a few things I can tell.

Offense
1. Hawaii's QB Colt B. is struggling with the NFL type talent. I guess the Georgia game wasn't a fluke.
2. Georgia's PK Cootu can kick 50+ yards field goals with ease and with more to spare.
3. Florida's WR Caldwell was catching everything in sight and has the extra gear for the deep pass routes.
4. DJ Hall was quite impressive with his route running skills and caught everything that was thrown to him with the exception of Colt's passes.
5. Arkansas's multi talented FB Hillis hits the gaps quick and hard and also block the pass rush, can run a good screen route, too.
6. Auburn's TE Bennett can't catch a pass to save his life or help on pass protection.
Defense
1.LSU'S DBs Highsmith and Jackson can run with the best of the WR'S, and have great instinct on the ball. (Saban's boys)
2. MSU's DT Titus Brown will be a first round pick. Doesn't look big, but explosive as ever.
3. Wallace was jumping offsides a couple of times but besides that was practicing his bull run with an coach from the 49'ers staff.
4. Simeon is great in bunch coverage of 10 yards but after that seems to get burn on the deep routes.

CNS was there on the sidelines, mostly watching the secondary coverage throughout the whole practice. Was on the cell a couple of times as well. Don't know if he was doing any recruiting in the gulf coast or not (Julio and Alonzo).
Al Borgas was walking back and forth the stadiums talking to coaches. Sat behinds Chiefs Head Coach Herm Edwards and ask him about how he thought Brodie was evolving and he replied "give him time."

Will be there Wednesday for day 3 and report afterwards. If there is somebody in general that you want me to watch, let me know and I'll tell you how they did.

Great update, thanks for that. I would love to hear how Wallace looks and how the coaches are treating him. He seems like the kind of guy that could really move up in the draft based on his performance at the Senior Bowl.

Thanks. Greatly appreciated since they took NFL network on Time Warner cable. I'll go to Sports Bar for the game, but I sure miss the practice reports. I'm mainly watching Gilberry and hoping he has a great week of practice.

Thanks for the update. I saw a little of Monday's practice. Your assessments are pretty accurate from what I saw.

1. I thought accuracy seemed to be a huge problem for Colt.
2. Coutu is very good. He has a great leg on field goals and kickoffs, which is important in the NFL with the smaller rosters.
4. I thought the same thing about D.J. yesterday. He looked really good-as good as any receiver there. He gave Simeon trouble on a few occasions. Simeon looked a step slow compared to some of the corners like Chevis.

One of the draft sites actually ripped Simeon pretty bad. They said he was pretty good in coverage on short stuff, but he had terrible speed and that really hurt him on anything downfield. After watching Demetrius Byrd in early November, I cannot say I disagree.

They projected him as a late round pick or a free agent, which sounds about right to me. Basically they said his only shot in the NFL was to play as a nickel or dime defender in a scheme that allows him to play zone and just squat on the underneath stuff.

Say what you will, but the best cornerback we had this year as the season went on was Kareem Jackson, not Simeon Castille. All of this only further verifies that notion.

Timed speed is well below average...

Click here for the whole thing. They have him as only a 4.60 in the 40, and that sounds about right. You have to figure that if you looked slow at times against college receivers, it's going to be a major problem in the NFL.

Always thought Simeon was a great nickel or dime coverage, where he can have room to cover and use his best asset, his instinct for the ball. Remember his freshmen and sophmore years when he was playing in that role.

I agree 100%

I watched it on the NFL Network on DirectTV today. Pretty good coverage. I can tell you one person that I was impressed with and he did not have a uniform on. It was Mike Singletery, ex-Bear LB great and coach with the 49ers now. That guy was really on them. He really busted a #52's chops. I think it was a GA Tech LB he was hounding. But, Mike knows his stuff. He is going to be a good HC one of these days.

The talking heads on the TV said that Colt was way, way, way to thin. He is like 6-2, but only 185 pounds. They said he was going to have to put on a lot of weight, or get killed. But they said he was better than the Chang guy was. But he had a lot of work to do.

That is true, but...

Defending receivers in the slot, as a whole, is a much easier job than covering receivers on the outside. Slot receivers generally are more possession-type receivers -- i.e. not as athletic as outside receivers -- and they generally run more possession-type routes. The big boys play on the outside, where you generally have extremely athletic receivers who run a lot of deep routes, particularly combo routes.

True, Simeon looked a lot better when playing in the slot, but that is also a much, much easier job, too.

Again, you saw what happened with Byrd when Simeon was matched up on a truly athletic receiver running the deep routes, he just couldn't keep up. There is a reason why he has such a poor projection.

As an outsider looking in I've never been too impressed with Castille. LSU recievers generally have owned him his entire career.

That being said, I hope Atlanta picks him. :biggrin2:

Pretty much. You guys had some dang good receivers, and he struggled against that level of athleticism his entire career.

The question I have always wondered is this... If Simeon's last name were not "Castille," what would people think of him then? If his dad weren't an Mr. Everything Bryant legacy CB, how would that alter the opinion of most on Simeon? Personally, I think by a significant amount. Simeon never lived up to the hype, in my eyes.

I know it is comparing apples and oranges, but personally I always thought Tim was the better player of the two. The knee injury he had against Tennessee in 2004 really destroyed his career. Prior to that, he looked like Jacob Hester, and after that he was really not a productive player, Jumbo package included. I'll never understand why he didn't redshirt in 2005.

And for the record on Simeon... I'd love to see the Saints get him. Hell, even me and you would be a big upgrade over Jason David.

Al least we can both agree on that. Where did Jason David even come from? He's horrible. Saints need a linebacker with the first pick. Then pick a good corner. Hopefully Chevis will still be on the board.

David signed a big free agent contract after winning the Super Bowl with the Colts last year. Naturally, the Aints front office and coaching staff thought they were getting a great cover corner. Problem was, David played in the Cover Two scheme in Indy, where he was responsible for short routes and defending the run, so he never had to actually defend any receivers downfield.

Then he comes into New Orleans where he has a lot of man-to-man responsibilities with top receivers, and guess what? Well, you know the story.

As for the 2008 NFL Draft...

A lot of mock drafts have the Saints taking Keith Rivers, the linebacker out of USC. It would be a great pick, to be sure. That said, drafting tenth and considering the apparent priorities of the nine teams ahead of them, the Saints should be in position to draft the first linebacker off of the board, so they will have their choice of the crop if they want to go in that direction.

I would love to see Chevis Jackson go to the Saints, but I'm afraid it is not going to happen. After the busts last year with David and Usama, they need a cornerback in the worst way, but I'm afraid Jackson may be off the board by the time they pick in the second round. If he is there, though, I think they may very well take him. Even if he can be as good as Corey Webster -- who in his own right has struggled a lot -- he would be a massive upgrade for the Saints at corner.

I suppose the good news, if there is any, is that their defense really cannot get much worse. I figure they will spend probably their top three picks on the defensive side of the ball.

My son and I went to Monday's practice and I agree with what you said about Colt Breenan. He really seemed to have a tough time with accuracy. I thought DJ looked pretty good with his route running and his hands.

If you go Thursday or Friday, could you watch Titus Brown and let me know how he performs. I believe they were going to try him at OLB instead of DE.
