Shaun Alexander Update

It's been a few weeks since we had an update on the status of Shaun Alexander around here, so I figured it was time for yet another.

A few weeks back, Shaun took official visits to the Cincinnati Bengals and the New Orleans Saints. Both teams have depth concerns at tailback -- Rudi Johnson had a year that was even worse than Alexander's, and he is getting old, and with the Saints it seems that Deuce will be cut -- and brought Shaun in. Unfortunately, those guys weren't too impressed, because neither club offered Shaun a contract.

The Broncos were also thought to be a possibility because of the continuing troubles of former Tennessee tailback Travis Henry, but that one did not pan out either. It was announced yesterday that the Broncos had signed free agent tailback Michael Pittman -- formerly of the Bucs -- and that will complete their off-season at tailback.

Unfortunately, things don't look very good for Shaun at the moment. No one in the league believes he can be an every-down back any more, and considering his shortcomings as both a receiver out of the backfield and a pass blocker, a lot of teams are turned off at the thought of adding him as a second string back because second string backs are largely required to do those two very things.

The three aforementioned teams were all viable candidates for Shaun's services, but they are now out of the running, as are several other teams that chose to upgrade the tailback position via the 2008 NFL Draft. Shaun will likely catch on with someone somewhere for the league minimum, but it does not seem that anything is imminent, and at the very best he is likely going to be a back-up player who will probably have to fight hard just to secure a roster spot during training camp.

This is easy for me to say, and I know everyone wants to go out on top, but there are worse things than having to retire rich in your early 30's and spend time with your family.

Good Lord! Gives a lot meaning to that saying that "NFL" stands for "Not For Long."

Oh I know, it really is hard to believe. I wish I had better news to report, but I'm afraid the outlook is very bleak for ol' #37.

I hope that he catches on somewhere and regains a portion of his former self during training camp. I'll be brutally honest... If he cannot do that, he will probably be forced to retire in the coming months. No one has any real interest in him now, and if his struggles continue in training camp, I'm afraid it will be the end of the road.

I swear, I'd rather Shaun go ahead and retire and be remembered for the productive years he had at Seattle than to have him begging for a job that he doesn't need. If he even halfway managed his assets, he doesn't need the NFL paycheck or politics. If he feels like he HAS to stay around football to survive, there's always coaching or motivational speaking.

I can't help but wonder that, if he'd been a little more devoted to the weight room, it would have prolonged his career some...

that broken foot didn't help him. When he was hurt and Maurice Morris capably handled the load, and is faster, it spelled the end for Alexander. Su isn't fast and now his durability is in question. Would the weight room have helped him? I don't know......definitely wouldn't have hurt, though!

Did he not sign a contract for alot of money a few years ago? Since he was cut, does that mean they don't have to pay him that money? If that's the case, then what's the point in the contract at all?

a certain portion of that contract is 'guaranteed money'. The rest is based on incentives, etc.

I guess the word contract, which is defined as
A contract is a legally binding exchange of promises or agreement between parties that the law will enforce. Contract law is based on the Latin phrase pacta sunt servanda (literally, promises must be kept). Breach of a contract is recognised by the law and remedies can be provided.
has become somewhat misinterpreted.

basically, a contract these days says:

"you will work for us X many years for X amount of money. But, it doesn't have to be for X many years and it's not necessarily for X amount of money. But still......sign here." :)

Especially if your an over 30 yr old RB in the NFL with recent injury plagued seasons......

The big negative against Shaun, at least amoung the NFL ranks, is that he doesn't run hard and that he avoids contact. I've heard people complain about his "lack of effort" in Seattle for years. Personally, I think Shaun has a few good years left and any team would be smart to pick him up, but unfortunately, he is going to have to fight that negative perception for a while.

It only seems like yesterday that he was scoring td's in Bryant Denny.
Shaun has served the Seahawks well. He is not going to set any records anywhere. If I were in his shoes, I would rent an armored truck and move back home with all that greenback.
If he chooses, he can keep very busy as a motivational or keynote speaker.

He will be ok. But it is weird to me that no one will take a chance on him. The teams in the league have taken chances with all kinds of less caliber ball players. Maybe he will get a shot again.

Hey, he can always become one of the talking heads on pregame shows he would do a lot better than some of the others.
