I know this has been an argument in times past but with the 12-team playoffs coming, does it even make sense to risk losing another game when you would automatically get an at-large bid?

Point in case for getting rid of them: BIG10 West is probably the biggest joke of a division outside the NFC South. Basically gives Ohio St or Michigan a 10th conference game against the SEC version of Vanderbilt/Miss St. (look at the soon to be defunct B10 West)

The only reason to keep them possibly would be for seeding purposes, but even then it’s a waste of time. Thoughts?

With the BIG10 and the SEC following what the Big 12 has already done and go without divisions.....sure, keep the conference championship games. It'll have the best two teams from each conference. The ACC and Pac 12 have already done away with divisions as well. I think the MAC and Sun Belt still have divisions.

If the Big10 had done it this year, they'd have The Game being played in back to back weeks. That would be great.

The SEC would still have Georgia-Bama

If the ACC still had divisions you'd have FSU playing whoever had the tie breaker between Georgia Tech and Virginia Tech.

The Pac 12 was last using divisions in 2021. If they still had them this year you'd have Washington playing Arizona, with Oregon finishing second in the North behind UW.

In a 12 team playoff it is almost better to lose a game and not have to play in a game that means nothing. Congrtas college football you have ruined a good thing.

Personally I will be watching far less regular season football in the future.
In the case of Alabama and Georgia, you play once in the regular season (which happens next year) then for the conference title should they both win out. So what happens when they are split 1-1 and now both are in the playoffs and have to meet for a 3rd time? It basically makes the conference title game meaningless and adds an unnecessary loss, putting one team at risk for being left out (in the SEC’s case, that may never be an issue as long as any team has no more than 2 losses) I’m sure Sankey wants to jam pack as many SEC teams as he can get away with

Basically it’s turning CFB into a NFL model which is insane. That’s what makes CFB unique. Money is slowly killing everything that made it what it has become.

When they split that up, who was supposed to be the powerhouse? …shoot I’ll settle for the decent team?
…I don’t really want to hear Iowa. The Hospital’s a great story…they get a LB/DB/OL drafted high fairly often…but come on, the Marquee program?
Michigan/Iowa is like a Bama/Kentucky SEC Championship match-up.
Great wrestling program!!!

Given the 12-team playoff, a conference championship game is a good way to help the losing team miss the playoffs. From a practical standpoint it's foolish to continue the conference championship game. From a money standpoint the game will probably continue.

I wonder what the financial trade-off is between...
(a) Conference championship game, but one fewer conference teams make the playoffs; vs.
(b) No conference championship game, but an extra conference team in the playoffs.

Not to mention the possibility of injuries incurred in the conference championship game... extra wear and tear on the players etc.

I would think that the SEC & B1G know that both contestants would get in a field of 12 and choose “C”…all of the above.
