For something different, that uses neither oil nor shortening.......

1 Cup self-rising flour, or 11/2 tsp. baking powder, 1/2 tsp. salt in a measuring cup and add all-purpose flour to measure 1 cup total.
1/2 Cup shredded cheddar cheese
1/2 Cup milk
2 Tbsp. Mayonnaise

In a small bowl, combine the flour and cheese.
Stir in milk and mayonnaise just until moistened.
Fill 5 greased muffin tins 2/3 full.
Fill empty cups halfway with water.
Bake at 425 degrees for 17-20 minutes or until golden brown.

Yes, the recipe can be doubled.

Bayou I finally made a good biscuit. Try this one:

4 cups Bisquick (I use Pioneer Brand Biscuits Mix)
2/3 cup club soda
8 oz. sour cream
1/2 to 1 stick of butter

Mix first three ingredients well
Melt butter in baking pan.
Roll out dough about 1/2-inch thick, cut with cutter and place in pan over melted butter.
Bake at 350º to 375º degrees, 15 to 20 minutes or until brown.
Brush tops with butter and enjoy

I might try it one day when I want to make some dog biscuits LOL.
I have seen the club soda & sour cream recipe before. I have even heard of using 7up or Sprite in place of the club soda.

2 great Southern biscuit recipes:
1) drive to my house & have mrs. exiled make biscuits

or, she would humbly recommend going right to the top:

2) drive to her Mom's house in SW AL & have my MIL make biscuits.
Hers are the "just add stuff until it's right" variety. They're so good that I enjoy a second helping after the (few) leftover ones have been sitting out on the table for a couple of hours after breakfast. I know she uses lard and I also think the particular biscuit pan she uses is a big part of the secret too.

Short of those two options, I can't help you. Sorry! :biggrin2:

In order to make great biscuits you need to use white lily self rising flour, crisco or lard ,and buttermilk. The best biscuits are not rolled out and cut, cathead biscuits have to be "choked off" ,put in a pan with a light coat of bacon grease, and dabbed on top with three fingers of bacon grease.Baked at 400 degrees. Then mix peanut butter and syrup togetherand sop it with hot biscuits.
