You can't get any more dramatic of an ending than this game. I doubt I ever live to see another one like this. This is a game where everyone who saw it will remember where they were/who they were with, etc. I still get chills when I hear Paul Kennedy's call at the end of that game.

No other game I've ever seen in person comes close to the thrill and absolute joy I had at Legion Field watching that kick as it went through the goalposts. It is by far my favorite post-Coach Bryant memory as an Alabama fan. Not even the championship game victories have been as satisfying. Maybe it was the way the drive built to the moment combined with that particular era of Crimson Tide football vs. the barn, but I absolutely treasure the memory of that game.

I did not care for Perkins seemed like he was on a mission to take down anything with Coach Bryants stamp down. I can tell some stories after he came down here to the Bucs.

I really don't care what Gene Jelks says about anything.

And poor Mike Shula was just over his head as a coach.

I'm glad we won the game & sorry if I sound so negititive just not a good era for me. Not long after CPB death I guess.

That game ranks as the all time thriller with the 2009 IB coming in at number 2 and 1996 (Kitchens to Riddle, 24-23) coming in at number 3.

I could not stand Perkins. Two good things came out of the Perkins years. The 1984 win over auburn. The 1985 win over auburn. That's it. He royally botched the 1986 Iron Bowl, (that game still ticks me off, we out played them all game long and then blew it on that stupid Tillman reverse :mad2:) and I truly believe that that game is what lead to him leaving when he did, which was fine by me. And how do we respond? By seriously screwing up getting Bobby Bowden and instead settling on Bill Curry! All these years later, I still wonder how AD Steve Sloan blew that one!

Unless this article is from last year, this is NOT the 25th anniversary of the Iron Bowl, which would have been last year.

I have a friend in Oregon who is a Washington Huskies fan. He has said - "If you don't think you love college football, watch the fourth quarter of the 1985 Iron Bowl and you won't be able to resist becoming a fan."

That was - in my judgment still after all these years later - the greatest college football game ever played. My father, who doesn't watch college, was glowing at church about it the next day, saying that that last 7 minutes was the best football he had ever seen.

Steve Sloan became the AD the same time that Curry became the head coach. Perkins was head coach and AD during his time there. When he resigned as head coach, that left no AD in charge. Joab Thomas, UA President, led the search for a new head coach and AD and hired Curry & Sloan. Sloan had nothing to do with hiring Curry.
