Question: Summer Workouts and Playbook Material

Since we seem to be really concerned about the lack of depth at LB and the need for immediate impact from the incoming Freshman, it got me to wandering about the amount of time that these new guys really have to prepare.
You hear the comments "hope they catch on to the schemes quickly"...etc. I realize coaches can't have contact with the players during the Summer. With that said, do they meet with upper classmen regularly to watch film and learn the schemes during the Summer or does most of this take place during fall practice?
It just seems to me that if they use the summer to prepare then they should know every scheme and what their role is.

Not true. Meetings are permitted during the summer. That being said, the young LBs will get most of their "learning" in when two-a-days start. I'm sure they've started learning some of the terminology, etc. but you don't learn a ton until you're corrected by coaches on the field and you see yourself on film with coaches instructing and correcting mistakes.

I guess I misunderstood. I thought that coaches could not have contact during the summer. So what you're saying is that the coaches can have team meetings. Do you know if during these meetings they break down film and learn schemes and their role?

This is permitted as long as it is "voluntary" on the player's end. Nothing wrong with meeting...coaches just can't conduct practices or workouts.

If CNS says we are having a meeting, guess what, you better show up. He seems to be a hard nosed tough guy but like the BEAR he just wants maximum effort. I think this year will be good but not great. I'm just looking for improvement. Despite our record i thought we showed some last year. RTR
