I think it is kind of interesting how they have touted Gary Darnell as being a great defensive mind. His defenses at Texas were good, but in his 8 years at Western Michigan, he produced (as a head coach) the 4 worst defenses in the history of the program...his last season in 2004 saw them giving up double the points that they averaged in most seasons.

I still say that the defensive problems at TAMU came from Fran micromanaging it and not from anything Carl Torbush did. Torbush was a great DC. Fran traded down.

Does the salary for the position include a training-bra bonus ?

RTR !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Darnell was not a popular hire. But with their "lynch mob" mood, who would be? I think they have adopted a wait-and-see attitude now and are hoping for the best.

Well, if you remember Torbush's first year at Alabama, the defense was not very good, but something happened in year 2 and they were very good. Not sure why his defenses didn't perform better at TAMU. Darnell has a great deal of experience and it will be interesting to see how he stacks up against OU and UT. As has been written in previous posts, TAMU should be at least 8-4 without breaking a sweat so some of the success will obviously go to Darnell unless he is blown out by OU and UT.

Agreed. I personally don't think Torbush was that great of a DC. I think the 2002 team was so good defensively because of talented players and senior leadership, not so much Torbush or his schemes. The secondary in 2001 gave up 252 passing yards per game, and was regularly torched against any team that had a decent passing attack. South Carolina put up 291 yards, Ole Miss had 325, Tennessee had 293 and LSU had 528. I wasn't too surprised to see that aTm's secondary struggled the way it has. I'm sure Torbush is a decent guy and I don't wish him any ill, but I don't think he's a very good defensive coordinator. Just my opinion.

Why do you think Torbush was so good at Bama and so bad at TAMU?

At Bama, Fran was only allowed one season of defensive meddling and was then told to fix the problem. The second season, Torbush was in control of HIS defense...not Franchione's. At TAMU he has had carte blanche to meddle and the defense has looked like the 2001 Bama defense the whole time.

That is what I think, anyway.

Franchione's micro-managing may be the answer since Torbush's defenses at UNC when Mack Brown was the HC were very good.

But they had this kid...um...forgot his name...Peppers. THATS RIGHT! Julius Peppers, whatever happened to him...did he make it to the NFL?
