I've been a Braves fan since 1977 - and that was an awful team - but just looking at another awful team that I saw in person. This is based SOLELY on the year in question, not the career numbers:
1979 BRAVES VS 2025 BRAVES
C - Bruce Benedict/Biff Pocoroba/Joe Nolan vs Drake Baldwin/Sean Murphy
1B - Dale Murphy/Bob Beall/Mike Lum vs Matt Olson
2B - Glenn Hubbard vs Ozzie Albies (tossup, maybe a slight edge to Albies)
SS - Pepe Frias vs Nick Allen
3B - Bob Horner vs Austin Riley
RF - Gary Matthews vs Ronald Acuna
CF - Rowland Office/platoon vs Michael Harris II
LF - Jeff Burroughs vs Alex Verdugo
So.....four of the eight everyday players would come from the 94-loss team and one more is a legitimate tossup (Hubbard made more errors - but he was also playing on a horrid infield that was considered the worst in MLB until 1991 when they revamped it; his hitting numbers other than homers compare).
PITCHING
Phil Niekro's 1979 would make him the best starter on either staff, and Gene Garber's 25 saves would make him a better closer than Iglesias. Granted - the other 2025 Braves starters would fill out the rotation better than the names out of the phone book from 1979, but as a reminder, the 1979 team was picked to finish last and played about what was expected; this year's Braves team was considered the best chance to beat the Dodgers in the NL>
My point is: this is a BAD team.
After 91 Games:
1979 Braves: 418 runs scored
1979 Braves AVERAGE RPG: 4.59
(league average: 4.44 rpg)
2025 Braves: 367 runs scored
2025 Braves AVERAGE RPG: 4.03
( league average 4.26 rpg)
My point?
The horrible 79 Braves were .15 rpg ABOVE the league average.
the 25 Braves (WS contenders) are .23 BELOW the league average.
