RON DESANTIS HAS centered his presidential campaign around the idea that he, and not Donald Trump, is the Republican candidate who can beat Joe Biden. That’s why Democrats have “picked” Trump as their preferred candidate.

Unfortunately for the Florida governor, Biden’s team is now saying the exact opposite.

Some of Biden’s closest confidants have in recent weeks told the president that DeSantis has performed so poorly in the primary, that the governor would likely be notably weaker than the twice-indicted Trump in a match-up against Biden, two sources familiar with the matter tell Rolling Stone. Biden has at times agreed with this premise in private conversations.

It wasn’t always this way. As recently as late last year, there was a widespread feeling among Team Biden and prominent Democrats that the governor was the more formidable candidate than the twice-impeached former president. But the more they’ve seen of DeSantis running a presidential campaign, the less concerned they’ve become about whether he can be beaten.

“I guess I could explain to you the … current position by asking a question: ‘Have you seen what Ron DeSantis has been up to lately?’” says one senior Biden administration official who has known the president for years. The sources note that there has been a dramatic increase in the past two months within Biden’s administration and campaign of officials who now view DeSantis as clearly the less intimidating GOP candidate.

Bear in mind this IS Rolling Stone, so I would take this with a grain of salt. However, this isn't the first time I've heard about this "about-face" concerning which of the two the Dems would rather face in the general.

i’m still waiting for the push to get rfk jr. to hop into the republican primary
You're going to be waiting for a hell of a long time. I suppose it's not unheard of, though. Trump was a New York Democrat for most of his life and we all know how that turned out. Still, asking a Republican to trust an environmental lawyer who favors gun control is a bit of a reach. For him, I'm thinking 3rd party is his most likely destination when he fails to win the Dem primary.

he won’t even be on the radar screen by the time the primaries get here, much less the general election.

Senior aides to Ron DeSantis oversaw the campaign’s high-risk strategy of laundering incendiary videos produced by their staff through allied anonymous Twitter accounts, a set of internal campaign communications obtained by Semafor reveals.

The videos include two that have created recurring distractions for his campaign in recent weeks: an anti-Trump video that featured a fascist symbol, and another that attacked Donald Trump for past comments supportive of LGBT rights.

The meme-filled videos emerged from a Signal channel called “War Room Creative Ideas,” screenshots of which were shared with Semafor and whose authenticity was confirmed by a second source familiar with the campaign.

‘No wonder Trump is kicking his ass': Newsom camp hits DeSantis on debate proposal
Gov. Gavin Newsom’s camp blasted Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis’ proposed rules, arguing that they are an attempt to hide his weaknesses as a candidate.

The similarities …

  • Both agree on some of the basics: (1) Hannity is the only person who can ask questions; (2) the debate will run 90 minutes; (3) staff can’t brief either governor once they have started; and (4) speaking time is to be equally divided between the two.
  • Hannity has to make sure the “governors do not interrupt each other during their designated time to speak.” (Good luck with that!)
  • Closing statements will be two minutes long and their order will be determined by coin toss.
The differences …

  • DeSantis proposes no opening remarks; each governor can instead provide a two-minute video “to make the case for their governing philosophy” that would air before the program begins
  • While Newsom proposed a mano-a-mano debate in an empty room, DeSantis wants a live audience, with tickets distributed “50-50.”
  • DeSantis sent two location options (Georgia and Iowa) compared to Newsom’s three (Georgia, Nevada and North Carolina) — i.e., the debate is looking awfully peachy.
  • Only one of the three date options DeSantis suggests lines up with the two Newsom floated: Wednesday, Nov. 8. So go ahead and mark it down — but in pencil, not pen.

This is a good move, IMO. It gives Gavin a head-start if or when Joe can’t go and Desantis needs to find some way to break the spell Trump has on way too many people. A rational debate may not convert a lot, but if his performance is strong, it at least gives Republicans something to think about. Of course, they have to actually start thinking first…

Not really getting the point of the debate. Why are they doing this? It would seem to amp up the whisper campaign about Biden not running.

It's not just whispers. Biden's approval numbers are still in the toilet and with the impeachment talk heating up, Dems need a solid plan B (and Harris clearly ain't it.) Newsome is young and would easily appeal to the suburban box-wine moms, but he needs more. This debate could be his ticket to the front of the line if he performs well.

Newsome may want to jump into the race if Biden gets sick or decides not to run. He'll get good national exposure for free. That's my guess. He would be a viable candidate.
Yea agreed that if Biden for some reason doesn't run it'd be good for him. But outside of that it seems like it could be a mistake.
