Wasn't Bruce Pearl suspended for 8 conference games for lying. Lying is lying to me. I've heard arguments that Pearl caused the violation he lied about so that makes it worse. I don't necessarily agree. The basic facts of each situation are that both coaches lied. Slive probably wouldn't have handed down a punishment had Pearl not lied. So, Slive gave Pearl an 8 game suspension. That's half the conference games. One would think the bastion of all that is good and right in college athletics would at least hand down a comparable punishment. But, no not at all. In fact, Delany says that the damage Tressel has done to his reputation is worse than any punishment he could hand down. Holier than thou, indeed.Dez Bryant was suspended for 10 games for lying about eating at Deion Sanders' house. How much more should The Vest get being the HEAD COACH of a major university? Reading the emails shows he wasn't concerned for the two players' "safety" at all... He was concerned about covering his hiney...and that's it. There were no requests for 'confidentiality' in the initial email. Dude's a lying liar. He got caught lying. He's upset that he got caught. No apologies for lying. No apologies for breaking rules. The only apology was that he was in "this situation."
http://www.nytimes.com/2011/03/10/sports/ncaafootball/10tressel.htmlThe Big Ten commissioner, Jim Delany, said the league was not considering suspending Tressel for additional games as the SEC did with Pearl. It will wait for the N.C.A.A.’s decision on Tressel.
“It’s not a positive,” Delany said in a telephone interview. “It’s a big issue. It’s a concern.”
Asked about stiffer penalties, Delany said that the only one that really cuts to the bone is the death penalty, which has not been on the table for decades. He said Tressel’s punishment transcended the fine and suspension.
“There’s a reputational damage,” Delany said. “Not only the financial penalty and the suspension, but reputational damage.”
