My wife and I are going to the game this weekend with her sister and brother in-law who have never attended an Alabama game. We would like to show them all the fun that is to be had, but it just so happens that I have not beet to a game in Starkville in a number of year and in fact just had the chance to go to my first away game in a long time for this years Ole Miss game. What would everyont recommend not only from a pregame festivities (IE meeting the team as they get off the bus, etc, etc...) standpoint, but also from a what establishments (eating, drinking, or otherwise) one must visit that are in the area standpoint. Thanks.

I don't think this is the answer you're looking for, but the best thing I've found to do over there is play golf at the MSU golf course. MSU has a turf management major program through the university and their golf course is a bargain.

As far as restaurants, etc., I've heard Starkville has gotten a lot better in recent years, but I've got no specific recommendations. I will tell you the Ruby Tuesday there was deplorable the last time I was in that area. I think the original Harvey's Restaurant is either in Starkville or Columbus, but don't quote me on that.

The last time I was there for a football game was 1998. It was rainy, we lost, and my coworker had a broken leg at the time so we ended up in the "handicapped parking" area, which was a muddy field behind the press box. That was in the middle of the Sherrill heyday when MSU was actually a very good team, and perhaps it was the attitude of the time but most of the MSU fans I ran into that day were fairly sour.

There's just not a whole lot to do there, it seems. Starkville, Auburn and Fayetteville are the three worst road trips in the SEC, in my opinion.

They have a Horseshoe Tournament immediately after the game, if you know where to find it!

Your best bet is to drive to the game Saturday morning, watch the game, then get in your car & get as far away as you can! That place is in the middle of nowhere.

At least I know where to go when I get to Columbus on Friday night now. :)

Close to subject, how is the traffic coming in from Columbus and what could I expect?

Having family in Columbus and often going there, so I'd eat in Columbus just because of the familiarity with all the good places in town. Ruben's is a great catfish restaurant, but their steak is just as good. Harvey's and Ruben's both get a lot of traffic, but Ruben's has a lot more capacity. I think Starkvegas has a Lil' Dewey's BBQ, but I've always thought their food was a little overrated...definitely no Dreamland.

STARKville is aptly named...It's STARK.

Any ideas on what time the team will arrive at the stadium? Also I believe at one time the band used to play pep rallys when they arrived at away games. Does this still go on and if so does anyone know when or where? Since it sounds like Starkville is not a "jumping" place I guess i need to focus on pre and post game activities.

You might be able to find a few cows to milk. That should take up some of your time.

The best thing to do in Starkville is go to a baseball game. They will have 10,000 screaming fans at baseball games, and they will be tailgating and doing it up right. unfortunately, baseball season in in the Spring, and you will be at the football stadium. So I'll echo a previous post--drive there, go to the game, and go home. Starkville is 90 miles from Tuscaloosa, so you should only add another hour and a half each way on your drive time.

The Grill on Maxwell St. in Starkville is a decent eat/drink place. They also have a location on Hwy. 45 in Columbus. MSU has a Bulldog FanFare (basically a smaller-scale deal similar to Kickoff on the Quad) prior to the game where you'll hear the band perform, can buy food from food tents, etc. My advice would be that if you want your in-laws to drink in (literally or figuratively) as much as the gameday atmosphere as possible, take them early and tailgate. Other than that, you're pregame options are mostly limited to sports bars and chain restaurants.
