In CKD’s last year at Washington Dillon Johnson led the Washington Huskies with 1,195 rushing yards in 2023, followed by Will Nixon with 201 yards.

I don’t know if this was an anomaly, or the result of a very effective QB (Michael Penix) and 3 NFL receivers.

Is it the system he is running or the talent? Jam Miller is 3rd or 4th string running back on the teams most years under Saban. He is more of a third down back that can catch it out of the backfield than an SEC type running back you can give the ball to 25 times a game. The 2017 team had Damien Harris, Najee Harris, Josh Jacob’s, Brian Robinson all in the backfield. Everyone of our guys is 5th string that year. The o-line has been subpar the last 4 or so years as well even before Kalen got here. That was the strength of the teams in the glory years but it was bad last 2 years under Saban and that has continued.

Back types are different. I think the type of back DeBoer wants are only now stepping on campus. AK Dear and Crowell will be special. The OL type that he wants is coming down pipe too. Players like Carroll and Jackson will fit their system and running style (OL that can actually get out and pull).

The best coaches are willing to change as the circumstances change. Bear had to do it, so did Saban. DeBoer is clearly a good coach, but if he is going to be great, if he’s going to be a champion, he will have to adjust to the environment of the SEC.
