1. Florida
2. Alabama
3. Georiga
4. California
5. Texas

Florida - has had alot of pretty good athletes coming out year end and out.

Alabama - I really believe Alabama has to be up on the top 5 list.

Georiga - If anybody gets players out of Georiga they normally turn out to be world beaters.

Texas - Texas has really started fielding some very good players.

Texas, Florida, and California are the top three, without question. After that, it's kind of interesting. Georgia, Alabama, and Mississippi all do a great job of producing talent. So do Ohio and Pennsylvania. But Texas, Florida, and California are the top three on sheer numbers alone.

Yep, and playing in the Cotton Bowl and hopefully beating Tech could turn out big for our recruiting for years to come. Even though some would have much rather we had been playing in Florida or even Atlanta for our bowl, playing in Texas against a Texas team could be the best thing that could have happened for our recruiting.

I guess Katrena wiped La as a top spot for talent.

Absolute Numbers vs. Per Capita

On an absolute numbers basis, I'd have to say:

1. California
2 & 3. Texas & Florida, exact order depending on the year
4 & 5. Pennsylvania & Ohio, exact order also depending on the year

On a per capita basis, Alabama, Louisiana, and Mississippi would have to be in there.

Taking the Atlanta metro area out of both the number of prospects and the population base, Georgia would also be impressive on a per capita basis. Including the Atlanta metro area prospects in the numerator and population base in the denominator, I'm not sure.

Not too long ago Texas supplied an entire conference with players (SWC) till it's demise. At that same time, Texas put many quality players on Big 8 teams like Oklahoma and Nebraska. I think Florida and California have caught up with them and I would say those are the top three states. They are three large heavily populated states where football is a big sport.

Listening to Beano Cook today and he feels that Florida is #1, Ca. and TX. next. He said that Pa. doesn't put the talent out that it once did.
A couple of years ago, an article came out that, based on a per capita basis, had Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Texas, Ca. and Bama in their top 6.

On a per-capita basis, I would think that Mississippi would almost certainly take the top spot.

For a state of only about 2.5 million, it puts out a tremendous amount of football talent.

Louisiana(pre-Katrina) and Alabama are almost equal in size and I would put Louisiana a good bit ahead of Alabama(on average) in the amount of top talent coming out.

Florida has a huge population, but it has a smaller percentage of its population at high-school age than Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana.

Texas and California have huge populations and similar percentages at high-school age, but smaller black populations per-capita. Their populations are mainly latino, which don't seem to produce football talent at the rate of other minority groups.

Northern states seem to produce more nationally-competitive talent in other sports, such as basketball and hockey, than in football. In the south, football is the premier sport with little else to compete with it. The rust-belt states also have much smaller minority populations, per-capita, than the sun-belt states.

Virginia is also a state with a relatively large population and a large percentage of high-school age minority kids. For the last several years, that state seems to always put out some of the top talent.

On total talent, I would rank the states:

Florida
Texas
California
Virginia
Louisiana

On per-capita talent, I would rank the states:

Mississippi
Louisiana
Alabama
Florida
Virginia

Interesting numbers from the Mobile Press Register's Super 120 in the South. Broken down by states represented:

Florida 33
Georgia 22
Louisiana 15
Alabama 14
Mississippi 14
South Carolina 9
Arkansas 6
Tennessee 5
Kentucky 2

Michigan, OSU, and Penn State don't live off Cal, Fla, and Texas you know...
The Monongahela valley was once one of the hotspots for recruiting. Back when all the steel mills were running and the area was really heavily populated it produced many players, some even came to Bama. It may have dropped off a little now but it is still a breeding ground for players headed to top programs.

Check out total number of prospects and number of blue-chippers each year for the last five and it seems that Georgia is above Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana. According to several recruiting sources this year, in fact, Georgia closed the gap on Florida in both categories.

I know this thread is about overall recruiting, but the last few years Hawaii has produced some huge OL and DL. What is the population of that state, and these are native Hawaiins (sumolians???).

The estimated population of Hawaii is a bit over 1.2 million. The native Hawaiians are Polynesians. There are Samoans on Hawaii, but they have migrated there and are not natives.

Samoans are also Polynesians, but they are specifically from the islands known as Samoa, which are about halfway between Hawaii and Australia.

There have been some very good Polynesian football players from Hawaii and from the minority groups of Polynesians that have settled in the Pacific states. There is probably a better representation of Polynesian players in the NFL on a per-capita basis than any other minority group, excluding those of African-American descent.

I'd have to agree that Ohio has alot of HS football talent. Look at the number of Div 1 (7) in state and Ohio provides players to Kentucky, louisville, ND and many other Big 10 teams.

I have read a couple of articles that said PER CAPITA...Mississippi puts more players in the NFL than any other state.

Read an article a couple of years ago that said PER CAPITA, Alabama and Oklahoma put out more All-Americans than any other state.

Not sure where their info came from.
