The portal closes today, correct? And we still have three spots open with very little buzz about anyone. This, by far, is the weirdest year yet!
It closes to enter the portal not to get them. As long as you are in it you can sign later. I know it is hard to believe some guys actually go to college and wait til after the semester. Last year we got Holloway on the 25th of April and Clifford May6th. Lot of our guys we lost signed later April last year as well.

Boogie Fland just entered the portal. We recruited him pretty heavily, I would think he'd be someone to watch out for.
That would be great. My worry is that all the bigger names entering the portal this late are doing so because it will likely be their last chance to cash in before the house settlement is approved. That will supposedly take away the current model of pay-for-play, so some of these guys may be looking for huge NIL deals one last time. I don't remember this many bigger names entering so late during last season's window.
That's surprising and not surprising. We were in on him during his original recruitment but I have a feeling his price tag is going to be large.

Can't imagine a scenario where Fland doesn't get drafted in the money round. But who knows, right?

I agree, @CrimsonTitles, that these guys, i.e. bigger names, are just using the portal as an insurance policy. I think you are spot on, but I can't say I blame them.

Having said that, I agree with you, @BamaHoopsBoi, that if he returns to college game, for whatever reason, he is one to keep an eye on.

To your point, @TiderJack, I agree about the price tag being high. He was considered to be one of the top point guards coming out of high school last year, if I recall correctly.

I think we showed with Dybantsa that we can hang with everyone else on the price. We don't seem to have any really high dollar guys on board at this point, so we might have the bank for Fland.

Don't know how close we were to getting him last year, but I can't imagine us not pursuing him just as hard this time around, if the opportunity presents itself.

Again, I think he's NBA bound, but it might get interesting. :)

How late would they be able to sign with someone else? I guess up until when the fall semester starts?

Travis Perry from Kentucky has entered the portal. We were one of the finalist to land him in recruiting. He isn’t flashy guy with ton of upside but he plays the game right and could be a nice back up point guard that can run the offense for you. He wouldn’t be my 1st choice because of lack of size and athleticism but we did have interest before and he could be back up point guard.

JMO, but we have guys who can back up the PG... Holloway being the most obvious. We have other needs at this point that are more pressing.

Speaking of pressing needs, THE most obvious need that I believe we have right now is the need for a triple-threat guy. Think about the guy in crunch time when you need a basket. He needs to be able to shoot the three, drive/finish at the rim, and pass off the drive to open guys. Say what you want about him, but Sears did all three pretty well for us the past two years... though he struggled with all three vs. bigger opponents. Who on our roster right now is this guy? I'm not saying "who can BECOME this guy", but who is this guy RIGHT NOW? Look at Clayton, Flagg, Cryer, etc. as examples of what I'm talking about. That's what we're missing at this point and that guy is going to cost some $$$.

Oh, I knew what you meant. When I read your post and the names of the examples you used of the type of player we lacked (which is where the #1 pick reference originated), my mind went straight to that character. Just having fun and keeping it light.

Don’t think
What we are talking about is the next Brandon Miller.

Hey, he only used 1 of his years of college eligibility!!!
Don’t think Miller was as much a passer… but he was a dominant scorer and could pretty much drive at will and finish. It may be that we don’t get that player this cycle.

Keep checking hoping for news because a starting lineup of Holloway, Wrightsell, bethea, Bowen, Williamson/Sherrell does not sound top 10.

I'm seeing a lot of wishful thinking from some fans but there is a huge drop off from what we are currently sitting at and what we had last year. I've seen numerous times people saying we upgraded with Bowen from Nelson which to me is laughable. With that being said, I'd be shocked if we don't lock up some big names in the coming weeks. We should have the ability to pay for the right guys with Philon, Cliff, Nelson, Sears, and company no longer with us. The NIL coffers should be more than available if we were able to secure the same allotment as last year.

Upgrade from Stevenson most likely but Nelson was great at rebounding and his d was solid. Offensive game was a little hit or miss though but at this point bigger shoes to fill. We will be in great shape if Philon comes back but very slim chance of that. I agree at this point it’s a big drop off. Guards are in bad shape at moment. I say this as in being a contender so a little critical.

So CBM heading to Southern Cal to play Eric Musselman, the Crown Prince of College Basketball Weirdness. A nut and a flake as player and coach. Bet that basketball team is like a bowl of granola before it is all said and done.
