*U keeping up with the Jones' again...

I wonder if *U is including removal of the statue in the budget for this project? If the statue is large enough, moving it into storage during the mandatory 10 year disassociation period is going to cost a pretty penny

ETA: Auburn's Heisman statues are too much, and Cam Newton's is far too soon | al.com

Thanks to details Jacobs provided, we now have a measure. It's a bronze likeness 1 ½ times life-size that weighs about 1,900 pounds.

Yeah... during the fundraising, Jacobs should make sure to separate off a "removal fund." :D

Guys, this is a university who named their football field in "honor" of a football coach who was fired for cheating. Seeing a Cam Newton statue erected outside their stadium shouldn't surprise anyone and is actually pretty fitting for them.

I don't care whether Auburn erects statues of their Heisman winners. It's been done before. I prefer statues of coaches rather than players, but that's just me.

In Auburn's case, Scarbinsky writes a good article (above link in YH's post). Lots of risk associated with erecting a Cam statue at this point. If I'm on the Auburn BOT, I'm advocating a requirement that a Heisman-winning player be at least 5 years removed from the program before he gets a statue.

Oh, man, this is rich in so many ways. I guess it would have been too obvious if Auburn constructed a Malzahn statue...

From what I've read what goes on at the farm , students stealing a campus vehicle, crashing thru the gates at the rodeo arena and doing donuts on the field, it would not surprise me if they were stolen and sold for scrap. Precious metals brings a pretty penny these days....

I can't stand Scarbinsky, even when I agree with him.

What do you think has gotten into him, writing something that actually makes sense? I usually won't click on any links to his articles but I couldn't resist an article critical of *U. Heck, I even gave up my much beloved Sunday coupons because I won't buy a B'ham News paper because I detest the guy so much.

Look, they is confused down thar on the farm. Seems they has to copy us'n and as they has 3 Hysemens versus 2 NCs with asterisks, they went with Hysemans. I wonder if they'll put $cam's down when his Hysemen is taken away.

Are they the tigers or the plainsmen, or war eagle? That's wot confusez me!

I think they should change their name to the more appropriate--cheetahs. "You can run but you can't hide," auBARN.

I'm surprised Bobby Lowder hasn't commissioned the creation of a statue of himself. Maybe Teletubby too - with that smirk and the huge ears and holding up 6 fingers. And the yeller feller, complete with the horse from his stupid commercials. There are endless possibilities of statues that embody the Auburn Fambly Spirit.

I saw that this morning and my first thought was "the REC had bought him a new SUV."

Making a statue of Scam is about as smart as naming a street or building after
Richard M. Scrushy

How true. Or having an ENRON trophy.

1. In my mind there are two great achievements in College Football: Winning a National Championship and winning the Heisman Trophy. I say if you have won some, then build statues, hang banners & etc. because you deserve them.

2. OTOH, if all you have are *’s and scandal-shrouded awards, then maybe you ought to rethink the matter, strictly from a PR and moral stance. However, if your university and fanbase are ALL IN -- then build away, your rep can’t be any worse. What have you got to lose?

3. I don’t think it is being a copycat to build a statue. If that is the case, then Bama copycatted whoever built the first statue to a great man. But if you make a big deal out of the fact that you are NOT going to do anything that would make it look as if you were trying to be “like them bammers” then you might ought to forego building a statue.

You'd think SOMEONE would have an issue with making a statue of someone who was only there for one year, dirtied the University's name, and probably couldn't have told you the Auburn creed if you offered him another $200,000.
