Game Thread: Uconn vs. Purdue...

I’m watching American Idol. And it’s horrible. But better than watching Lurch v Klingon
Monday Night Raw for me. Very entertaining night after Wrestlemania show. Based on this thread and what I've seen from Pur-don't, the level of athleticism was probably higher too. Score suggests a plodding, clumsy affair.

My thing with officiating is let both teams know early on how the game will be called with actionable examples. Don’t call it differently on one end of the floor and completely different on the other. Is that too much to ask? I think not. RTR

What's a bit frustrating for me is that we had pretty decent officiating vs UNC and Clemson.

But they definitely let UConn get away with Murder vs us.

They beat us up on both ends all game and got away with most of it and we breathed on them and got called.

I mean we were shooting like 80% from 3 at half and still trailed by 4 because of it.

I still think we could have beat them if our shots kept falling in the 2nd half but it wasn't going to be easy with the one sided calls.

I was just fixing to say after this game, we should at least be second when thd final poll comes out lol

They should at least jump us up to somewhere in the Top 4-8 at worst.

Last year they jumped all 4 Final Four teams like 12+ spots and FAU and SDSU jumped like 16-20 spots.

We were already in the Top 20.

I'll be close to Livid if we aren't around or in the Top 4 after playing UConn tougher than anyone.

They are pretty good with keeping teams around their final tournament finishes. This team she be no lower than 4th in the polls. I'll make a tough argument for 2nd but I'm sure Purdue will get that spot.

Being in the Top 5 Two years in a row would be impressive too.

UConn and Bama would be the only ones.

We're Close to becoming a serious fixture at the Top.

This was just a horrible matchup for Purdue which is 95% of the tournament. Edey is pretty much unstoppable but Clingon is the one guy that matches up with him in height and strength along with decent footwork. Purdue had 1 good player and a few guys that leaned on him to make them decent players. Like I said in the girls game with Iowa, Clark was the best player but if you were doing a pick up style game and picking 10 players it would have been Clark then about 8-9 straight Gamecocks players. Edey was the best player but then the next 6 best guys are from UConn. UConn has good talent nice fit of drivers shooters and big men it felt like it was 5-3 as Purdue didn’t have any other offense besides Edey and Smith. They are also very well coached almost after every timeout these last few games Hurley drew up a play that got them an easy bucket or to stem a run. We hung with them for 30 minutes but we’re still trailing at half while shooting 70% from 3. The second half of last 4 games for UConn have been just straight domination. It is really UConn and a step or two down below anyone else.

I tend to agree ... without Edey next season, I doubt this team makes it to the sweet sixteen. But if we happen to lose both Sears and Grant, I believe next years team will be talented enough to make an elite eight run.

If some how bama could have drawn Purdue in final 4 it would have been bama playing uconn tonight.

The final rankings really don’t matter but I suspect Purdue will be #2 and us at #3.

I went to bed at half and got up and finished it this morning.

The game transpired almost exactly as I thought. UConn just gradually pulled away with better coaching and players.

It's a championship formula that should remind all of us of the way CNS did it for years!

We just didn't have the right pieces this year to be great on Off and Def.

Last year we were 20th in Off Eff and 3rd in Def Eff but imo we we're derailed by the off the court distractions and a few lingering injuries situations.

This year we were 2nd in Off Eff but 111th in Def Eff.

We just fell off a cliff on Defense.

I don't think it's scheme though.

We might need to fine tune some things to create a better balance but we mostly need a couple pieces to be able to do it.

It really hurt losing some of the guys who left early and transferred.

We need at least 1 rim protector that can add something on Offense as a plus.

We could also use a True PG that can consistently drive and finish as well as distribute.

I don't think we are too far from putting it all together.

It's honestly amazing we went as far as we did with such a drop off on Defense.

But back to the point I think we can have both a Great Off and Def with the pace we play because last year showed that.

What we can do about the Officiating I have no clue because it's very rare for us to get fair or favorable calls.

We get absolutely hosed on the road and it makes it virtually impossible for us to win Road SEC games against the Top teams.

But even at Coleman we have zero advantage from the stripes. It's maddening and it's always been like this.

I guess we'll know when we reach 'Blueblood' status when we don't get worked at home and catch some questionable breaks...lol
On the officiating issue. I think officiating is highlighted in our games because of 2 reasons:

1. Our pace of play. We expose ourselves to having more foul opportunities simply because we have to defend more offensive sets of our opponents. I suppose it's similar to fast paced offenses getting exposed more on defense because they are on the field more.

2. But I think the main thing is CNO's offensive philosophy involves 3 things: 3's, drives to the rim and getting FOULED and going to the line.

So 2 out of 3 of CNO's offensive principles depend on going into the lane and either finishing OR absorbing contact and getting a foul.

You combine our high paced style with this and there are just more whistles opportunities for the stripes. When they get "whistle happy" it seems to get out of hand.

It’s almost worse when they don’t call the fouls. Because we can’t get to the line.

Sears shot 6 FTs in the last 3 games on 22 2-pt shots
